For the 2024 season, we have transitioned to a larger displacement G16E-GTS engine as we confirmed its development scope and evaluation through past activities. We will continue to develop for new goals.

To be more precise, the 1.4L turbo inline 3-cylinder engine we have developed so far is a short-stroke version of the G16E-GTS 1.6L DOHC direct injection turbocharged inline 3-cylinder engine. The bore x stroke of the G16E-GTS engine for the GR Yaris is 87.5 x 89.7 mm, but has been changed to 87.5 x 77.0 mm to make it 1.4 liters. It was developed as a short-stroke engine.

Tomoya Takahashi, president of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, explained: “Last year we collected data on what we wanted to try on a technical level, so this year we would like to try various ways to use the commercially available 1.6-liter engine. ” The G16E-GTS type engine, installed on the GR Corolla and GR Yaris, has a maximum power of 224 kW (304 HP) / 6500 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm (40.8 kgfm) / 3250-4600 rpm /min, which is already said to be a masterpiece, can be mounted vertically, and I will put it to the test on the race course.

This vertically mounted G16E-GTS engine is paired with a newly developed vertically mounted 6-speed manual transmission. This new 6-speed MT was recently developed based on the European Lexus IS 2.2-liter diesel engine. The traditional 6-speed manual transmission, used during the Altezza era, was improved and continued to be used, but torque capacity was limited. For this reason, the newly developed 6-speed MT will have approximately double the torque capacity of the previous model. The maximum torque of the G16 engine is 400 Nm, so there is no doubt that the newly developed 6-speed manual transmission has a higher torque capacity.

If you actually look at the G16 engine installed in the GR86, you will see that it is located deep under the hood. It is expected that the race will be used to confirm the balance between actual driving, zero-carbon fuel fumonisity and drivetrain durability.
