Grandson speaks about condition of ex-president

The seriously ill former US President Jimmy Carter is cared for by his family at home. His grandson gave a little insight.

Since former US President Jimmy Carter received home hospice care, things have gone quiet around him. But now his grandson Hugo Wentzel gave a little insight into the life of the former peanut farmer. “He always wanted to do something with his brain, so he does a lot of his own work,” the grandson told the American online site Entertainment Weekly.

Jimmy Carter was diagnosed with dementia in May and was taken home by the family where he is being cared for. His wife, Rosalynn Carter (95), is also at his side.

“He’s really very ill and getting older,” Wentzel said of the 98-year-old Democrat, who sat in the White House from 1977 to 1981. It’s difficult to visit, but Wentzel’s mother, Amy Carter, spends a lot of time with her father. It’s a very family environment. The ex-president uses audio books. “He’s brilliant,” says Wentzel of his grandfather.

Carter’s wife also has dementia. “When I see her, she sometimes forgets what’s going on around her. But when she remembers, that’s just great. I love her,” says the 24-year-old.

Wentzel had appeared on a show where contestants have to guess which famous person other cast members are related to. Some players and parts of the audience suspected Wentzel’s family ties with Donald Trump. “I don’t want to be associated with Trump,” he said. He never met him, but Bill and Hillary Clinton did.
