Investigations into the death of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his wife, Cristina Grossu, have taken a disturbing turn, with authorities now probing the possibility of an inside job connected to a burglary and alleged bank fraud. According to search warrants reviewed by WBTV, “hundreds of thousands of dollars” were stolen from the Biffle family following their deaths in a plane crash last December.

The warrants allege that family bank accounts were compromised before the break-in, with at least one fraudulent check cashed from an account linked to Biffle’s business interests. Iredell County detectives told WBTV, “We find multiple suspects over multiple states. We can’t say they’re not connected, but we’re still investigating.”

Tragic Loss and Subsequent Crimes

Greg Biffle, 55, Cristina, and their two children died on December 18th when the plane owned by Biffle experienced issues shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. The aircraft attempted to return to the airport but crashed, resulting in the tragic loss of all four passengers.

Less than a month later, on January 16th, Biffle’s home was burglarized, with an initial report indicating approximately $30,000 was stolen. A family friend staying at the residence discovered the break-in after finding doors inside the house had been kicked in. The current investigation suggests the burglary and the alleged financial fraud may be coordinated, relying on insider knowledge of the couple’s accounts and routines.

A NASCAR Career Cut Short

Biffle enjoyed a successful 13-season career in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2003 to 2016, securing 19 victories. Notable wins include the 2005 Southern 500 and the 2003 Pepsi 400 at Daytona. He was a consistent contender, finishing in the top 10 in points six times throughout his career.

Prior to his Cup Series success, Biffle demonstrated his talent in NASCAR’s lower series, winning the Xfinity Series championship in 2002 and the Truck Series title in 2000. This made him the first driver to win championships in both series, establishing him as a rising star in the sport.

Biffle’s contributions to NASCAR were recognized in 2021 when he was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in the sport’s history. His untimely death was met with an outpouring of grief from the NASCAR community, with many reflecting on his skill, sportsmanship, and charitable work.

Investigation Continues

Authorities are currently withholding the names of potential suspects as the investigation continues across multiple states. Detectives are working to determine the connections between the individuals involved and the extent of their alleged involvement in both the fraud and the burglary. The case remains active, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

The unfolding investigation adds another layer of tragedy to an already heartbreaking situation for the Biffle family and the NASCAR community. The possibility of betrayal by those within their “inner circle” has deepened the sense of shock and outrage surrounding the case.
