Climate activist Greta Thunberg, along with 11 other activists, embarked on a journey to the Gaza Strip aboard the ship Madleen on Sunday. the Freedom Flotilla Coalition organized the mission to deliver aid and challenge what they describe as Israel’s siege of the territory.
The ship departed from Catania, Italy, carrying essential supplies, including baby formula and medical provisions. The coalition emphasized that the vessel is unarmed, nonviolent, and acting in accordance with international law. They hope to increase international awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Thunberg expressed the importance of continuing to act despite the odds, stating, “The moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.” She added that the mission’s dangers are insignificant compared to the world’s silence in the face of the ongoing crisis.
Israel has eased its blockade of Gaza to a limited extent,permitting some humanitarian aid. However, U.N. agencies and aid groups report that restrictions, lawlessness, and looting continue to hinder aid delivery to the region’s approximately 2 million Palestinians. Experts warn of potential famine if more aid does not arrive.
The activists anticipate a seven-day journey, contingent on not being stopped. A previous attempt by the Freedom Flotilla to reach Gaza failed after a vessel was reportedly attacked by drones off the coast of Malta. the group blamed Israel for the attack.
Israel maintains that its blockade is aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages taken during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack. Hamas militants killed about 1,200 peopel and abducted 251 in that assault. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the subsequent Israeli offensive has killed over 52,000 Palestinians. Israel denies accusations of genocide,asserting that its actions target Hamas militants.
“We are breaking the siege of Gaza by sea, but that’s part of a broader strategy of mobilizations that will also attempt to break the siege by land,” said activist Thiago Avila.
