What Happened: Grupo México’s Bid for Banamex

Grupo México ⁤announced on Friday that it has submitted an offer to Citigroup (Citi) to acquire 100% of Banamex, one ⁣of Mexico’s oldest and largest banks. The conglomerate, owned⁣ by magnate Germán larrea, stated that its terms are “more ‍attractive” for Citi and would result in Banamex being regulated primarily⁣ by Mexican financial authorities. Grupo México believes this would allow Banamex to regain its competitive potential within the mexican financial‍ system.

Though, Citi has publicly stated ‌that it has not yet received a formal offer from Grupo México. The bank maintains that its current preferred ‍path is the agreement reached last week with entrepreneur fernando Chico Pardo, President of the southeast Airport ‍Group (ASUR), for the ⁣purchase of 25% of Banamex, alongside a proposed Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The Competing Bids: Larrea vs.Chico Pardo

The situation is complicated by the existing agreement between Citi and Fernando⁤ Chico Pardo. Larrea has acknowledged Chico Pardo’s investment and indicated a willingness to potentially acquire only 75% of Banamex, respecting Chico Pardo’s stake. “If the Chico family decided to maintain their participation, we would be very pleased to have them as investors and the usual minority rights of market would be respected,” Grupo México stated.

Citi has confirmed that Chico Pardo is the only bidder with whom they currently have a⁤ definitive agreement. They have committed to reviewing any offer from Grupo México responsibly, considering regulatory approvals and the certainty of closing‍ the transaction.
