Sahel Jihadist Group Escalates Attacks in Mali and Burkina Faso

the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), Al-QaedaS affiliate in the Sahel, has ramped up it’s offensive in Mali and Burkina Faso. This escalation follows calls for increased cooperation and promises of further action from key figures within the jihadist group.
Mahmoud Barry, a prominent GSIM figure, delivered a speech on March 30 during Eid-el-Fitr, urging people in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to support the mujahideen. The speech,captured in a propaganda video released April 10,took place in a rural area of central Mali.
Similarly, in late May, Ousmane Dicko, GSIM’s second-in-command in Burkina Faso, made a similar address after his forces seized Djibo on May 11. He called on civilians to stay away from enemy locations and foreshadowed additional operations in another propaganda video.
As predicted by its leaders, the jihadist group, led by Iyad Ag Ghali, has intensified attacks in recent weeks. Following the capture of Djibo, other areas in Burkina Faso, including Sollé and Diapaga, have been targeted. GSIM claimed responsibility for killing at least 200 soldiers in the Djibo assault. in Mali, the group attacked army camps in dioura on May 23, resulting in approximately 40 deaths, and in Boulikessi on June 1, where they claimed over 100 military casualties.
