The wrestling world is buzzing with speculation about a potential clash between Gunther and Brock Lesnar, a rivalry that could culminate in a high-stakes retirement match for “The Beast Incarnate” at SummerSlam 2026. Gunther, already establishing himself as a dominant force by ending the careers of wrestling legends Goldberg, John Cena, and most recently, AJ Styles, appears open to the challenge.

At the Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Gunther decisively defeated AJ Styles, leaving the veteran unconscious after a brutal sleeper hold. While Styles initially appeared to signal his retirement by teasing leaving his gloves in the ring, he ultimately decided against it, citing family considerations and the possibility of future opportunities. This outcome further cemented Gunther’s reputation as the “Career Killer,” a moniker he seems to embrace.

During an appearance on The Morning Shift, Gunther was asked about potential future opponents. When the name Brock Lesnar was suggested, he didn’t dismiss the idea, instead offering a calculated response. “That’s a good one, right? We’ll see. I think there are a bunch of examples of people who overstay their welcome, who just hang on a little bit too much, who chase one moment too much. It seems like there is a big amount of people to choose from,” Gunther stated. This comment, while not a direct acceptance of the match, certainly didn’t rule it out, fueling speculation among fans and industry observers.

Gunther’s remarks highlight a consistent theme in his approach to veteran talent – a perception that many established stars linger too long, clinging to past glories. Since his arrival on the main roster, he has positioned himself as a force for change, unconcerned with respecting legacies and focused solely on dominance. This attitude makes a confrontation with Lesnar, a long-time cornerstone of WWE, particularly compelling.

The idea of Gunther retiring Lesnar has gained traction within wrestling circles. Bully Ray, during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, even laid out a potential roadmap: retire AJ Styles at the Rumble, bring back Brock Lesnar, and then retire Lesnar at SummerSlam in his home state of Minnesota. This scenario aligns with reports suggesting that 2026 will be Lesnar’s final year as an active competitor, with John Cena himself hinting at a “ride into the sunset” at SummerSlam.

SummerSlam August 1-2 is scheduled to take place at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a location that holds significant emotional weight for Lesnar, being his home state. This adds another layer of intrigue to the potential retirement match, making it a fitting and symbolic end to his illustrious career.

The groundwork for this rivalry was arguably laid during a brief but intense face-off between Gunther and Lesnar at the 2023 Royal Rumble. While a match didn’t materialize at that time, the encounter left a lasting impression on fans and hinted at the potential for a future showdown.

Lesnar’s recent hiatus from WWE television is about to end. He is scheduled to return to tonight’s episode of WWE Raw at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, just days before the Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event in Chicago. This return immediately shifts the focus to a potential collision course with Gunther, particularly given the Ring General’s continued dominance and willingness to target established stars.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that, aside from Roman Reigns, Lesnar is expected to appear at the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble PLE, and that a match between Gunther and Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 is a possibility. WWE had previously considered this match for WrestleMania on two separate occasions, but plans were scrapped due to concerns about Gunther’s readiness and, more recently, Lesnar’s involvement in legal proceedings.

However, with Gunther now at the peak of his momentum, having forced John Cena to tap out in a retirement match last month, and Lesnar’s return to the company, the timing appears to be right for this blockbuster encounter. The return of “The Beast” could very well be the first step toward a WrestleMania 42 showdown, and a career-defining retirement match for Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.
