[이뉴스투데이 전한울 기자] The National Science Museum of Gwacheon announced on the 9th that it will be broadcasting live online from the evening of the 12th to the dawn of the next day, the Perseus meteor shower, which shows the best observation conditions since 2018.

Meteor showers occur as the Earth passes through debris left in the orbit of a comet or asteroid by the solar wind. Every year between July 17 and August 24, Earth orbits Comet Swift-Turtle, when the Perseus meteor shower occurs. Therefore, much more meteors than usual fall intensively during this time.

The name of the Perseus meteor shower is derived from the meteor’s radiant point in the constellation Perseus. It is considered one of the three major meteor showers of the year along with the Quadrant (Dragon) meteor shower in January and the Gemini meteor shower in December. The Perseus meteor shower is also famous for its bright and colorful shooting stars.

The International Meteor Organization (IMO) is forecasting the maximum time of the Perseus meteor shower this year at around 4 am on the 13th. Up to 110 meteors can be observed per hour.

In particular, this year’s Perseus meteor shower shows optimal observation conditions as there is no moon in the observable time zone. This is the first time in three years since 2018, and if the weather is clear, it is expected to be the best space show this summer.

Gwacheon National Science Museum dispatches an observation team to the Yanggu Guktojeong Central Observatory, one of the observatories with the best observation conditions in Korea, to broadcast clear and clear images of meteor showers.

The live broadcast of the meteor shower will be held on the YouTube channel of the National Gwacheon Science Museum from 10 pm on the 12th to 4 am the next day. .

In addition, real-time images of the Milky Way using ultra-sensitive cameras and astronomical images such as nebulae and star clusters are provided along with commentary. In addition, various episodes related to meteor showers will be introduced and a comment event will be held for viewers, and 20 books signed by the author will be provided to the winner.

Gwacheon National Science Center Director Lee Jeong-mo said, “Summer is the best season to watch the stars with family. I hope it will be a precious time.”

Detailed information related to online broadcasting can be found through the YouTube channel or website of the National Gwacheon Science Museum.
