CAIRO – Hamas, the armed political faction controlling the Gaza Strip in Palestine, has initiated a large-scale attack against Israel. As tensions escalate, Israel has declared a state of emergency and vowed retaliation against Hamas.

According to local media, including the daily Haaretz, Hamas launched hundreds of rockets towards southern Israel, beginning at approximately 6:30 am on the local time of the 7th.

Tragically, one Israeli woman lost her life, and at least 15 others sustained injuries from rockets launched from the Gaza Strip. In southern Israel, Palestinian militants have reportedly crossed the separation barrier, taking civilians hostage in Opakim and other areas, and engaging in confrontations with Israeli soldiers, as reported by Haaretz.

In a statement, Commander Mohammad Deif, leader of the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attacks, proclaiming, “Today is a momentous day to end the Israeli occupation. We have resolved to halt the power’s crimes without them escaping the consequences. It is now over,” he declared.

Hamas further declared, “We announce Operation ‘Al-Aqsa Flood.’ In the first 20 minutes alone, we fired over 5,000 rockets,” rallying all Palestinians to join the fight. Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian armed group, also announced their participation in the offensive.

Meanwhile, the Israeli police chief stated, “This is a war situation. The Gaza Strip is subjecting us to massive attacks. Fighting is occurring in 21 locations throughout the southern region,” leading to the prohibition of civilian movement in the area.

The Israeli military has also declared a state of emergency in an 80km area near the Gaza Strip’s separation wall, anticipating retaliation from Hamas. The military warned that Hamas not only launched rocket attacks but also infiltrated its members into Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened an emergency meeting with ministers responsible for security to discuss response measures.

This latest attack by Hamas is expected to be the most significant armed conflict since the ’11-day war’ between Hamas and Israel in May 2021, which erupted amid clashes over the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque.
