Qatar Condemns Israeli Strikes as Threat to Gaza Ceasefire Talks

Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which Israel said targeted Hamas operatives, have been strongly condemned by Qatar as a intentional attempt to undermine ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. The United states reportedly informed Qatar of the strikes shortly before they began.
Qatar Accuses Israel of Sabotage
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, described the Israeli action as “treacherous,” asserting it was intended to disrupt the delicate ceasefire talks. Qatar has been a key mediator between Israel and Hamas, alongside Egypt and the United States. The strikes occurred near the city of Tire in southern Lebanon, according to Reuters.
The U.S. reportedly provided Qatar with a ten-minute warning before the strikes commenced. This notification, while providing some advance notice, did little to mitigate Qatar’s condemnation of the action’s timing and intent.
Hamas Claims attempted Assassination Failed
Hamas officials stated that five of its members were killed in the strikes, but claimed the attempt to assassinate members of their negotiating team was unsuccessful. The group has not publicly identified the specific individuals targeted. Al Jazeera reports that Hamas has vowed to continue participating in ceasefire negotiations despite the attack.
Broader Regional Context
The strikes represent a notable escalation in tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. Hezbollah has exchanged fire with Israel almost daily since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023,raising fears of a wider conflict. The timing of these strikes, coinciding with ceasefire negotiations, suggests a deliberate attempt to increase pressure on Hamas and perhaps derail the talks. The conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack on Israel that killed approximately 1,200 people and led to the capture of over 240 hostages, according to BBC News. Since then, Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 32,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health ministry, as of April 1, 2024.
