Washington D.C. – July 16, 2025 – The ongoing conflict in Gaza, now in its 22nd month, has seen meaningful shifts in US policy, especially following Donald Trump’s return to the Oval office. Israeli officials had previously expressed confidence that a Trump presidency would empower the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to achieve a decisive victory against Hamas. Though, the reality on the ground and the diplomatic maneuvering have painted a more complex picture, marked by controversial decisions and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
A Stalled Peace Process and Shifting Strategies
A pivotal moment in the recent history of the conflict occurred in March when the Trump administration reportedly allowed Israel to withdraw from a potential hostage deal. This decision, rather than advancing towards a second phase that could have included a permanent cessation of hostilities, signaled a departure from previous diplomatic efforts.
Following this, Israel initiated a new offensive, reportedly aiming to control approximately 75 percent of the Gaza Strip. The stated objective was to exert pressure on Hamas, but this military strategy has been accompanied by severe humanitarian consequences.
The Aid Blockade and the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation
For a period of nearly three months, israel imposed a near-total blockade on aid entering Gaza. Aid organizations have widely attributed the escalating hunger crisis in the Strip to this blockade. In response, the United states, in collaboration with Israel, helped establish the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The GHF was intended to streamline aid distribution and circumvent Hamas’s potential involvement.
However, the GHF’s operations have been fraught with challenges. Reports of deadly shootings of Palestinians attempting to collect aid boxes have been frequent. While the GHF claims to have distributed around 90 million meals, the aid consists of dry food products that require planning. This process is increasingly challenging in Gaza due to the scarcity of clean water, cooking gas,and kitchen equipment. Moreover, the GHF’s lack of tracking mechanisms for aid recipients raises concerns about whether Hamas operatives might also be benefiting from the distributed supplies.
the Phased Hostage Deal: A Point of Contention
Adding to the complexities, the US has seemingly adopted Prime Minister Netanyahu‘s approach to hostage negotiations, favoring a phased deal.Hamas has proposed releasing all hostages in a single exchange for a permanent end to the war.Netanyahu, however, has resisted this, citing concerns that it would leave Hamas in power.
The negotiations have consequently become protracted, with Hamas agreeing to release approximately half of the hostages in return for a temporary 60-day ceasefire. Yet, Hamas has also presented a list of demands aimed at preventing Israel from resuming military operations after the truce expires, creating a stalemate in the diplomatic process.
The removal of certain “guardrails” by the Trump administration regarding israel’s military campaign, coupled with the contentious approach to hostage negotiations, has placed the US in a delicate position, balancing its support for Israel with the escalating humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The long-term implications of these policy shifts on regional stability and the prospects for a lasting peace remain a subject of intense scrutiny.
