Massive Police Mobilization Ahead of German Election

September 22, 2023

Hamburg – An enormous police operation is underway just a day before the crucial Bundestag election. With tens of thousands of participants expected, authorities are bracing for potential unrest. The city is preparing for multiple demonstrations that aim to promote democratic unity and counter right-wing sentiments.

Demonstrations and Traffic Alerts

The police in Hamburg are expecting around 80,000 people to participate in several demonstrations this Saturday. As part of a large-scale mobilization, the police are ready for these events to ensure public safety. This operation mirrors past major events such as the Women’s March in Washington D.C. in 2017, where over 500,000 people gathered, leading to a significant police presence and minimal disruption.

The primary goal is to show solidarity and reinforce democratic values, which is timely given a recent rise in right-wing sentiments in Europe and the U.S. where movements like the Neo-Nazis and QAnon conspiracy enthusiasts have seen vehement opposition and wider social distancing,

The police have warned of substantial traffic disruptions, advising drivers to plan accordingly.

Covered in media, demonstrations are already witnessed in smaller numbers around the city, representative of cities like Columbus, Ohio, where numerous interlocutions were conducted before large demonstrations

Where to Find Demos in Hamburg

The largest march, with 65,000 expected participants, will take place in the inner city. A broad alliance, including components similar to the Sunrise Movement for Climate and labor unions such as the AFL-CIO, will rally gathered at 12 PM in Willy-Brandt-strasse. Their theme is “We Won’t Be Divided: Hamburg Chooses Unity.” Similar sentiments have been witnessed in Jacksonville, Florida where strong community involvement and cooperation over public safety issues have led to lowering crime rates.

A second demonstration, expecting up to 15,000 participants, is scheduled to start at 2:30 PM at Glockengießerwall, with a theme “Clear Stance Against the Right.” This event promises a “mobile anti-fascist demonstration disco.” Both events are set to converge in the Mönckebergstraße and later at the Heiligengeistfeld, with an estimated 80,000 participants.

Large Protests Against AfD

In Hamburg-Harburg, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is holding a final rally of their campaign in Norddeutschland at 4 PM in the Friedrich-Erbert-Halle. Three counteractions are planned, with more than 1,000 participants expected. These actions echo similar opposition against extremist speakers all over Europe and Iceland where significant opposition was showcased during mass demonstrations disallowing any further proceedings.

More Northern Protests

In Kiel, around 1,000 people gathered for a demonstration against right-wing extremism. High school students from a local high school organized the event, reflecting growing youth involvement in political activism, much like the Parkland students who advocated for tighter gun control laws post-September 2019-20 – being pivotal in advancing legal reforms.

Why it Matters

These demonstrations highlight the wider political landscape in Germany, mirroring similar social movements in the U.S. such as the Black Lives Matter protests, which saw a similar mobilization of law enforcement and counter protests. German authorities have typically supported such protests, as long as they respect the law and public safety, demonstrating their commitment to democratic principles and self-justification of large-scale protests.
