Hannah Kobayashi, the Hawaii woman whose disappearance sparked a nationwide search, has released a statement days after being found safe. The 30-year-old expressed gratitude for the support she received while emphasizing her need for privacy and healing.
“I was unaware of everything that was happening in the media while I was away, and I am still processing it all,” Kobayashi said in a statement to NBC News.
Kobayashi, who returned to the U.S. from Mexico on Sunday, issued the statement through her aunt, Larie Pidgeon.
Kobayashi’s family reported her missing on November 13th after she failed to board a connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York. Her disappearance triggered a frantic search effort,fueled by surveillance footage showing her leaving the airport with an unidentified man.
Adding to the family’s anguish,Kobayashi’s father,Ryan,traveled to Los Angeles to assist in the search but was tragically found dead near LAX on November 24th. Authorities ruled his death a suicide.
While Kobayashi’s family initially expressed concerns about human trafficking, police investigations found no evidence of foul play. the los Angeles Police Department later reclassified Kobayashi as a voluntary missing person after surveillance footage showed her crossing the border into Mexico independently.
“My focus now is on my healing, my peace and my creativity,” Kobayashi’s statement to NBC said. “I am deeply grateful to my family and everyone who has shown me kindness and compassion during this time.”
Kobayashi’s family has not disclosed details about where or how she was found.
