A two-year-old child from the Hà Đông district of Hanoi developed constipation after consuming a small daily quantity of green vegetables, according to a report published by fr.laodong.vn. The boy’s mother, Đinh Thị Xuyến, brought her son to the hospital after about a week of symptoms to determine the exact cause and secure proper treatment.

Dietary Changes and Hospital Examination in Hanoi

Mme Xuyến stated that she routinely includes vegetables in her son’s meals at home, with teachers cutting the produce into small pieces to make eating easier. However, the total quantity of vegetables consumed each day remained relatively small. While the child previously maintained this diet without experiencing digestive issues, constipation emerged after about a week of the routine.

Upon arrival at the hospital, attending physicians questioned the family thoroughly regarding the child’s symptoms and daily food intake, placing particular emphasis on the volume of green vegetables consumed. Doctors then ordered standard medical examination steps to evaluate the boy’s condition. Mme Xuyến noted that following the visit, she plans to increase her son’s intake of green vegetables and probiotic enzymes to prevent future episodes of constipation.

Gastrointestinal Insights on Pediatric Constipation

Dietary evaluations in many of these cases reveal that young patients eat minimal green vegetables and consume monotonous diets consisting primarily of rice and a single side dish.

Green vegetables supply essential fiber, water, vitamins, and components that support the intestinal microbiome. A deficiency in greens diminishes the body’s fiber supply, which normally stimulates bowel movements. Furthermore, a lack of green vegetables leaves the child’s body short on water, compounding the severity of constipation.

Medical Recommendations for Early Evaluation

Hospital physicians advise parents to seek medical consultations early when children display signs of constipation. Beyond insufficient green vegetable consumption, constipation can signal various underlying medical pathologies. Prolonged and undetected constipation risks dangerous health complications.

ThS.BS Trần Hải Yến, from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Hanoi Pediatric Hospital, recommended that parents offer children seasonal green vegetables featuring diverse, rainbow-like colors. Dark green vegetables provide iron, calcium, and folate, while yellow vegetables contain beta-carotene and certain red vegetables supply vitamin C. Additionally, green vegetables deliver both soluble and insoluble fibers to support children’s digestive systems.
