Hanoi suddenly had hail

People in Chuong My district (Hanoi) recorded a hail phenomenon on the evening of April 20. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning also appeared in many districts of Hanoi.

On the evening of April 20, many people in Chuong My district (Hanoi) said hail appeared in the area. Ms. Phuong Nhung (residing in Nam Phuong Tien commune, Chuong My district) said that the hail fell from about 8:30 p.m. and lasted 10 minutes. The stones are small, only about 2-3cm in diameter.

People in other communes such as Dong Lac and Dong Phu of Chuong My district also recorded the above phenomenon. Accompanying the rain is thunderstorms and lightning lasting from about 7:30 p.m.

According to rain measurement data from the Hanoi Drainage Company, heavy rain fell in many districts of Hanoi within 30 minutes, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The place with the highest rainfall is Ha Dong with 31mm, Nam Tu Liem 27mm, Cau Giay 20.7mm.

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said that through monitoring on satellite cloud images, lightning location images and weather radar, convective clouds developed strongly in Phu Tho province from 7:30 p.m. and moved toward the area. Hanoi, causing thunderstorms in many districts.

By 9 p.m., the rain had subsided in many places but could return overnight.

Under the influence of wind convergence at high altitude, on the evening and night of April 20, showers and thunderstorms appeared in many places in the North with a common rainfall of 20-40mm, in some places over 70mm.

This phenomenon may continue on the evening and night of April 21. Experts say that because it is the changing season, there is a conflict between hot and cold air masses, so people continue to be wary of accompanying hail, thunderstorms, and lightning phenomena.

Notably, in the next 3-6 hours, the areas of Dien Bien, Son La and Phu Tho provinces are likely to continue heavy rain with a common amount of 30-70mm, in some places over 80mm. These areas are at high risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.
