Hapalua Half Marathon Honolulu: Road Closures and Restrictions

More than 12,000 participants are expected to take part in the Hapalua Half Marathon in Honolulu on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The event, described as the largest Hapalua ever, will utilize a new course that requires extensive road closures and traffic restrictions throughout Waikiki and downtown Honolulu.
The race is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. At the Duke Kahanamoku Statue in Waikiki. Runners will follow a 13.1-mile route through the city before concluding at the finish line located at Kapiolani Park.
Race Route and Course Path
The course begins with a left turn onto Kapiolani Boulevard and a left onto Atkinson Drive leading to Ala Moana Boulevard. From there, the route proceeds right onto Ala Moana Boulevard and continues straight to Alakea Street.
The path then turns right onto Alakea Street, left onto Queen Street, and left onto Bishop Street. After crossing Ala Moana Boulevard, runners will turn left on the ocean side and continue straight on Ala Moana Boulevard.
The final stages of the race involve a right turn onto Kalakaua Avenue and a left onto Monsarrat Avenue. Participants will then turn right onto Paki and move up the mountain side of Diamond Head Road, turning left at Triangle Park and right on Paikau.
The route concludes with a right turn onto Kahala Road, continuing along the ocean side of Diamond Head Road toward the finish line at Kapiolani Park.
Traffic Advisories and Road Closures
Significant road closures will be implemented to accommodate the race, with most roads expected to reopen by 9 a.m. On April 12, 2026. The Honolulu Police Department will manage the flow of cross-traffic once the majority of runners have passed through specific areas.
- Kalakaua Avenue: Completely closed from Kaiulani Street to Kapahulu Avenue from 3 a.m. To 9 a.m., and from Kuhio Avenue to Kapahulu Avenue from 4 a.m. To 9 a.m.
- Downtown Roads: All roads makai of King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard will be closed at Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard from 4 a.m. To 8 a.m.
- Nimitz Highway (eastbound): Completely closed from Bethel Street to Ala Moana Boulevard from 4 a.m. To 8 a.m., though access to Aloha Tower will remain available.
- Ala Moana Boulevard (eastbound): Completely closed from Alakea Street to Waikiki from 4 a.m. To 8 a.m.
- Ala Moana Boulevard (westbound): Completely closed from Kalakaua Avenue to Nimitz Highway from 4 a.m. To 8 a.m.
Detours and Access Restrictions
Traffic bound for Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue will be diverted onto Kuhio at Ala Moana Boulevard. For those traveling toward Waikiki via the H1, the King Street exit to Kapahulu Avenue is the recommended route.
Several areas will experience limited access and delays between 6 a.m. And 7 a.m. As runners pass through key intersections:
- Ala Moana Beach Park: Limited access while runners pass the Atkinson and Kamakee intersections.
- Kewalo Basin Harbor: Limited access while runners pass the Ward and Ala Moana Boulevard intersection.
- Kaka’ako Waterfront: Limited access; drivers are advised to use Forrest Avenue (eastbound) due to expected delays at Ward Avenue and Cooke Street.
