Denise “Belter” Harper retained her title in a boxing match against Katharina Zimmermann, though the fight followed a somber tribute to Georgia O’Connor, a 25-year-old boxer who died Thursday after battling cancer. A 10-bell salute honored O’Connor, a popular figure in the boxing community.
GBM, a relatively new promotional outfit, hosted the event, marking their first stadium card and world-title headliner. Harper’s ring walk occurred late, around 11:10 p.m. BST, after all the main undercard fights went to the judges. Despite some fans having already left, harper received a warm welcome from those remaining.
The difference in skill between Harper and Zimmermann was clear early in the fight. A left hook from Harper in the first minute prompted “Yorkshire” chants from the crowd. Harper, a former super-featherweight and light-middleweight champion, trapped Zimmermann against the ropes, landing blows to the head and body. Zimmermann, from Hamburg, entered the fight wiht a 13-0 record, having started boxing at 37. However, she faced a tough opponent in Harper, who has fought world-class boxers such as Natasha Jonas and Alycia Baumgardner.
Zimmermann’s determination did not compensate for her lack of openings. She did manage to land an uppercut in the sixth round, briefly frustrating Harper. In the final round, Zimmermann bled from her head after an accidental clash of heads. Harper, who had expressed disappointment with the prospect of winning on points, could not deliver a decisive blow.
