Tiger Woods reached a plea deal in Martin County, Florida, on Wednesday, pleading no contest to a reduced charge of reckless driving and refusing to submit to a lawful test following a car crash earlier this year, according to prosecutors. Woods, 50, appeared in a Martin County courtroom to resolve DUI charges stemming from a March rollover crash on Jupiter Island, north of Palm Beach.

Court Appearance and Plea Details

Woods initially pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence and refusing testing after his dark Land Rover collided with a truck carrying a trailer in March. Martin County prosecutors stated that had the case gone to trial and resulted in a conviction, Woods could have faced up to a year in county jail. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, though it carries the same legal weight as a conviction within the criminal justice system. He was accompanied to court by his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, who sat behind him during the hearing.

Prosecution Statements and Crash Context

Martin County State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl spoke to reporters following the hearing about the visibility and responsibilities of high-profile figures behind the wheel. Somebody will see him, whether it’s in Georgia or Nevada or New York or where have you. He’s not to drive a car. Bakkedahl added that he remained unsure whether the terms of the deal would permit Woods to drive a golf cart. According to officials, the March crash occurred when Woods attempted to pass a truck and trailer turning into a driveway off a two-lane road. The truck driver reported looking into a mirror and seeing Woods driving at high speeds before swerving to avoid a direct collision. Woods clipped the back of the trailer, causing his Land Rover to roll onto the driver’s side and forcing Woods to climb out through a window. Neither driver sustained injuries in the incident. Bakkedahl stated that Woods told authorities at the scene he was under the influence and had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket. Prosecutors noted that Woods and his legal counsel fully cooperated in handing over evidence. In the days following the crash, Woods released a statement on social media indicating he was seeking treatment. I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in, he wrote at the time.
