Hassan Sunny, the 42-year-old Singaporean goalkeeper for Albirex Niigata in the Singapore Premier League, delivered his youngest daughter at home after his wife went into sudden labour, then turned to YouTube for guidance on what to do next.
The Singapore goalkeeper shared the experience during an appearance on 8days’ chat show DNA, where he joined his eldest daughter, Sarah Arissa, to discuss life on and off the pitch. Sunny described the birth as “the most memorable,” explaining that while he had already packed a hospital bag, his wife’s labour progressed so quickly that he had to step in and assist with the delivery himself.
“My wife had a home birth, and I was the one ‘catching’,” Sunny said. When host Rebecca Lim jokingly asked if he used his goalkeeper gloves during the delivery, he laughed and clarified that the situation was entirely unplanned.
Sunny recounted hearing his wife shout that the baby was coming, prompting him to act immediately. After the birth, he searched online for information on what to do next, specifically turning to YouTube for help in the moments following the delivery.
The goalkeeper, who is also an F&B business owner, is a father of four daughters aged 16, 13, eight, and four. His eldest daughter, Sarah Arissa, was present at home during the birth and recalled her mother yelling “so loudly” during the labour.
Sunny continues to balance his professional commitments as Albirex Niigata’s goalkeeper with his role as a father and entrepreneur. His candid sharing of the home birth experience highlighted both the unpredictability of parenthood and the resourcefulness required in emergency situations, even for a professional athlete accustomed to high-pressure moments on the field.
