Understanding Tsunami Alerts
It’s crucial to understand the distinctions between tsunami alerts:
Tsunami Warning: This signifies that a tsunami capable of causing widespread, dangerous flooding and powerful currents is expected.
Tsunami Advisory: This indicates that a distant earthquake has occurred, and a tsunami is possible, though likely less severe than a warning.
The Magnitude of the Event
The earthquake itself was a monumental event, with the USGS upgrading its magnitude from initial reports of 8.0 and 8.7.The sheer power of this quake is underscored by the fact that it ranks among the most importent ever recorded by the agency. Adding to the seismic activity, magnitude 6.3 and 6.9 aftershocks were also reported in the vicinity of the main tremor. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
