The connection between food and health is a long-established one. As Hippocrates stated, Let food be your medicine.
This sentiment echoes thru history, with economist Malthus and philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach both noting, We are what we eat.
This awareness is central to Food Expo Versilia.
The third edition of Food Expo Versilia, a blend of fair and conference, will take place from Saturday, March 29, to monday, March 31, at Principino di Viareggio. The event celebrates the food and wine of Versilia and its neighboring parks. The region,nestled between the Apuan Alps,the sea,and the Park of Migliarino San Rossore,is known for its rich culinary offerings.
Approximately 40 artisans will showcase their products, including honey, cheeses, beers, biscuits, spices, meats, chocolates, wines, and preserves. thes producers are based in the area between the two parks, extending Versilia’s borders.
They either source their raw materials here or come from the surrounding areas to sell their goods at the local farmers markets.
The event will also feature conferences, cooking demonstrations, workshops for adults and children, book presentations, and tastings, all aimed at promoting local food culture.
The program for Saturday and Sunday is designed for the general public, while Monday focuses on industry professionals. A conference from the University of Gastronomic sciences of Pollenzo will explore the relationship between food and health. Additionally,students from hotel schools in Barga,Viareggio,and Seravezza will compete in preparing a seasoning based on seasonal fish and vegetables.
On Sunday at noon,a conference will discuss the importance of seasonal ingredients and the benefits of aligning with nature’s rhythms for well-being. Oncologist Francesca Genazzoli and writer Annalisa Chessa will discuss plant nutrition, further emphasizing the link between diet and health.
The Food Expo Versilia will also host presentations of culinary books, including local recipes and discussions on common dietary misconceptions. Doctor and psychotherapist Andrea grieco will address these misconceptions on Sunday at 4 p.m.
In addition to the artisan food exhibition, the event will feature workshops for all ages, demonstrations by chefs and pastry chefs, including Luca Landi of Lunasia, who will create a dish with ricotta and mucco Pisano from the park of Migliarino San Rossore. The event will also highlight iconic local pastries, such as donuts, rice pudding, and bomboloni.
Reflecting the importance of prevention in health, the Veronesi foundation and the Italian League for the Fight Against Tumors (lilt) will participate, promoting campaigns focused on tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil.
