Heartbreak in Paris: Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki Fall to Tennis Legends, Settle for Silver at the Paralympics
Paris Paralympics: Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki Win Silver Medal in Men’s Doubles
Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki, the Japanese tennis duo, secured a silver medal in the men’s doubles event at the Paris Paralympics, held on September 6th local time.
The second-seeded pair, consisting of 18-year-old Oda and 35-year-old Miki, faced off against the top-seeded British duo, Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid, in the final match. Despite their best efforts, they lost 2-6, 1-6 to the experienced British pair, who boast an impressive 21 Grand Slam titles.
Oda and Miki, with a 17-year age difference, had a remarkable run in the tournament, winning their first match in the second round and the quarterfinals in straight sets. They then defeated Daniel Caberzaschi and Martin de la Puente (Spain) in a thrilling semifinal match that lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes, advancing to the finals.
Although the Japanese pair had advanced to the finals of all Grand Slams held this year, they were unable to overcome the British duo’s experience and skill. Hewett and Reid, who had previously lost silver medals in the Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo tournaments, finally claimed the gold medal in their third final.
Oda and Miki’s silver medal marks the first medal for the pair, and they will be looking to build on this success in future tournaments. Oda will also compete in the men’s singles final on September 7th local time, where he will face world number one Hewett once again.
