HEINEKEN has partnered with Magnum photographers for a new documentary project titled Europe’s Living Room, capturing the atmosphere of bars, pubs, and restaurants across 11 European countries to highlight their role as essential community spaces. The initiative coincides with European Beer Month in October and explores how these unpretentious physical venues serve as modern democratic anchors, countering an increasingly digital and isolated society.
Photographers Capture Traditional Pub Culture Across 11 European Countries
Photographer Mark Power documented British pub culture, highlighting the speed and informality of ordering at the bar. In London’s Marylebone District, the Devonshire Arms operates as a traditional venue that shuns food service, slot machines, and loud music in favor of quiet conversation over beer. Power positioned his large-format camera across the street to capture the lively street scene outside the establishment.
Sessini noted that small town bars across eastern France and southern Italy served as essential pillars of the social fabric during his youth, a network he watched decline beginning in the late 1990s as populations shifted toward digital isolation at home.

Historic Venues and Global Sports Events Draw Modern Crowds
Other photographers documented venues that bridge local heritage with contemporary social dynamics. In Graz, Austria, Emin Özmen captured patrons playing cards on the terrace of Gösser Bräu, a rustic pub and restaurant featuring a traditional beer garden.
Reflecting on pandemic disruptions, Lorenzo Meloni revisited Milan six years after documenting northern Italy’s COVID-19 lockdowns. Meloni photographed patrons conversing outside I Vaccinari near the Arco della Pacea, illustrating the resilience of public hospitality venues. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Bieke Depoorter explored dark-paneled bruin cafés known for their welcoming, convivial ambiance.
HEINEKEN Survey Reveals Neighborhood Travel Trends
Recent survey data from HEINEKEN indicates that 35% of travelers have visited a particular neighborhood specifically for a venue. Furthermore, 77% of respondents reported visiting a local pub, bar, café, or taverna multiple times during their most recent European holiday, demonstrating the ongoing influence of these hubs on regional tourism and cultural immersion.
The photos capture real life, not staged moments. They’re reminders that these places aren’t just venues, they’re part of people’s lives. In an increasingly digital world, these spaces still play an important role in fostering connection, supporting local communities and giving visitors a genuine experience of local culture.
Glenn Caton, President Europe at HEINEKEN
This project resonated with us so strongly. Magnum photographers have painted a portrait not just of places, but of the people who make them matter. A true understanding of Europe’s Living Rooms is earned by staying long enough to relate to them, and this is exactly what documentary photography can capture that other mediums can’t. It doesn’t just illustrate a place; it witnesses it.
