Hopewell, NS – The community of Hopewell and beyond mourns the loss of Herbert Edward Lays, affectionately known as “Herb,” who passed away on July 31, 2025, at the age of 86. Herb​ was ⁣a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and ⁣freind, leaving behind ⁤a legacy of hard work, unwavering faith, and a deep love for his family.

A Life Forged in Skill and Dedication

Born in Antigonish, Herbert was the son of Alongo and Grace (Whitewood) Heighton, and later became the cherished chosen son of Freeman and Ethel (Brown) Lays. His journey‌ in life was marked ⁢by a profound dedication to ‌his craft and a remarkable ability to bring⁢ ideas to life.

Herb’s professional life⁣ was rooted in his extraordinary skills as a machinist.‍ His expertise was sought after at prominent establishments such as Trenton Works and Michelin, and he was a valued member of Millwright‌ Local 1178. For nine years,⁤ Herb proudly owned and operated “Thistle Mechanical” in Hopewell, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and his innate talent for repair and‌ creation. It was a rare moment when Herb wasn’t immersed in a project, his hands always busy ​with a seemingly endless list of tasks.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Herb’s passion for life extended into a rich tapestry of hobbies. He found joy and purpose​ in tending to his ​bees,‍ caring for birds, meticulously tying flies for fishing, crafting beautiful furniture, and even trying his hand at panning for gold. His adventurous spirit also led ‌him to never miss an opportunity for hunting or fishing, ‍activities that connected​ him deeply with the natural world.

A Foundation of Faith and Family Love

At the heart of Herb’s life⁢ was his deep-rooted faith and his⁤ enduring love for his family. He was a devoted husband to ‌Rhoda, his “beautiful ⁢wife,” with whom he shared ‍65 years of marriage, a union that began on New Year’s Eve in 1957. Together, they moved to ‍Hopewell in 1969, where they poured their hearts and souls into transforming a house into⁢ a ⁢warm and welcoming home.

Herb’s faith was a guiding force, providing him with the ​strength and grounding necessary ‌to support his loved ones. He was an active member of Our⁢ Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in‍ Stellarton, where⁣ his presence was a source of ‍comfort and inspiration.

He was a loving father⁤ to his only son, Herbie (Katie)⁢ Lays, and his daughters, ⁣Sharon (David) Mollins and Coleen ⁤(Jack) Russell. Herb’s role as a grandfather was equally cherished,as he doted on ​his grandchildren: Sarah,Emily,Colby,David,and Natasha. His joy was further amplified by his great-grandchildren, ⁤jada, Autum, Perry, and ​Axell, who brought an extra sparkle to his later years.

herb⁣ was also a dear brother to Thelma Walsh (Bill) of Toronto, Eleana Soloposki-Palmer⁢ of Toronto, and Marlene Ince of ⁤Stellarton. He ⁢was ⁤predeceased by his brothers‍ Harold, Vernon, George, and Otto Heighton, and his sisters Marie and Verna, who are undoubtedly remembered ​with⁣ fondness.

A Farewell and ⁤Gratitude

The family expresses their profound gratitude for the exceptional care provided by ‍Evelyn ‌lockhart,⁣ whom they ⁣lovingly refer to as their “caregiver and guardian angel,” acknowledging her invaluable contribution to making their lives easier.Special thanks⁣ are also extended to Dr. Erica Tratz and⁣ Dr.Aldrebi, and also the entire ⁢palliative care team, for their‍ compassionate support during Herb’s‌ final days.Visitation and Funeral Services:

The⁤ family invites friends and loved ones to pay their respects during a visitation ⁣on Sunday,August 3,from ‌1-4 pm at Eagles Funeral Home in Westville. The funeral service will be held on Monday, august 4, at 11 am at Our Lady of⁣ Lourdes Roman Catholic Church,⁢ with Fr. ibeh MacDonald presiding. Burial will follow⁣ at Lourdes Cemetery,with a reception thereafter.

Herb Edward Lays will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory⁤ will forever live on⁤ in their hearts.
