Hezbollah Confirms Leader Hassan Nasrallah Killed in Israeli Attack
Hezbollah recognizes Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s top leader, was killed in an attack by Israel.
Foreign news agencies reported that the Israeli Defense Forces announced on Saturday, September 28, 2024, that Mr. Syed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, was killed after they carried out an air strike on Hezbollah’s central control center in the southern area of Beirut last Friday.
Hezbollah confirmed that Nasrallah, the group’s leader for 32 years, was killed in the attack. The group vowed to continue fighting against Israel, supporting Gaza and the Palestinian people, and defending Lebanon and its civilians.
Israeli Response
“The Israeli army has eliminated Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Awichai Adraei said. “He will no longer be able to threaten this world.”
The Israeli army also reported that the same attack killed Ali Karaque, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern armed forces, and other unnamed officials.
Condemnation from Iran and Other Countries
Iranian officials condemned the airstrikes as “war crimes” and said that Abbas Nilforusshan, deputy chief of operations of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was also killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Friday.
Other countries in the Middle East, including Iraq and Yemen, also condemned the killing of Nasrallah. Iraq’s Prime Minister’s office identified Israel’s actions as “crossing all existing red lines” and proclaimed a three-day mourning period.
Escalating Tensions
Israel launched several airstrikes in Beirut on Friday, amid reports that Nasrallah had been targeted. Israeli attacks continued into the early hours of Saturday. Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in retaliation, and the IDF said it was able to intercept some of the rockets fired.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they were mourning the death of the former Hezbollah leader and vowed to increase their support.
