Dublin, Ireland – Ireland has officially classified Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) as a controlled drug, a ‍notable move aimed at⁤ curbing its widespread⁢ availability and mitigating⁤ associated public health risks, especially concerning ⁣mental health. The Department of health announced‍ the reclassification, which places HHC⁤ under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, following ‍its identification by ⁣the EU and the UN Commission for⁢ Narcotic Drugs as⁤ a substance posing a⁤ serious threat.

HHC: A⁢ Growing Concern in Ireland

HHC, a synthetic cannabinoid that produces ⁣effects similar to THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, has been‍ increasingly prevalent in Ireland as its first detection in 2022. It has been commonly sold through various channels, including e-cigarettes or vape pens, herbal⁣ mixtures, oils, edible jellies and cakes, and⁣ tinctures.

The substance has been linked ⁤to episodes of psychosis and hospitalisation.A recent study conducted by researchers at University Hospital galway (UHG) highlighted the⁤ severity of the issue, finding HHC to be the second most common drug used ⁣by patients presenting with psychosis over a⁢ 21-month period.

This⁣ reclassification comes after the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland expressed strong criticism‍ earlier this month, stating it was “beggars belief” that products containing ⁤HHC remained available without restrictions. ⁤The college emphasized that HHC has ⁣caused significant damage to people’s ⁤mental health.

Government ‍Action⁣ and Public Health Priorities

Minister for Health ‍Jennifer ‍Carroll MacNeill stated that the marketing of HHC, particularly in attractive packaging and forms like vapes and edible jellies, is a intentional ploy to target young people. She ⁢stressed that these presentations mask the drug’s harmful effects on⁤ youth mental health and its addictive potential.⁢ “Our priority is to advance measures that enable us to protect and support ⁣the health of our population,” Minister Carroll MacNeill affirmed.

The Department of‍ Health’s statement confirmed ‍that HHC is now among 14 new substances, including synthetic opioids and semi-synthetic cannabinoids, classified as controlled drugs. this action ‍is a direct response to ⁤their identification by international bodies as posing a serious risk to public⁤ health.

Expert Reactions and Future Concerns

the Chair of the Addiction Faculty at the College of psychiatrists‍ of Ireland, Professor⁢ Bobby Smyth, expressed frustration over the delay in banning HHC in‍ Ireland,⁤ noting ⁤that many European countries had ‍implemented similar bans months prior.Professor smyth, also a Clinical Professor of Public Health and Primary Care ⁣at Trinity college Dublin, voiced concerns about what might happen next.

“How quickly can vape shops take HHC off the shelves and replace ⁣it with something similar but different?” he⁤ questioned. he⁢ highlighted the worry that⁣ some⁣ users, having⁤ become accustomed⁢ to HHC over its years of availability in Ireland, might seek ⁤similar alternatives, ⁢thus perpetuating demand.

The addition of HHC to the schedules of the Misuse ‍of ⁣Drugs Acts will grant An Garda Síochána (Irish police) enhanced ⁤powers to⁤ combat the illicit trade of the ⁢substance.

Professor Smyth also raised questions about why HHC was not initially ‍covered under the ⁤psychoactive Substances Act ⁤2010. This act was ⁤instrumental in dismantling the “headshop” problem in Ireland, where businesses could ⁤circumvent drug laws by quickly altering ‍their product formulations when specific substances were made illegal. He recalled that ‍the ban on headshops led to a noticeable decrease in psychotic patients, a trend he hopes to see replicated ‍with the ⁢HHC ban.The College⁤ of Psychiatrists of Ireland reiterated its earlier stance,‍ emphasizing⁤ the critical need for ⁣restrictions on such man-made drugs that mimic cannabis effects and have demonstrably harmed mental well-being.
