Northampton Saints recorded a 71-48 victory against Bath at Franklin’s Gardens on 10 October 2026, producing the second-highest aggregate points total in Premiership Rugby history. The fixture followed a 94-33 win by Northampton against Bristol Bears on 15 May 2026, which set the all-time record with a combined 127 points.
Record-Breaking Totals Across Premiership History
Five of the ten highest-scoring matches in the top flight have occurred since January 2024, with three of those high-scoring fixtures taking place in 2026 alone. Prior to the recent surge in high-scoring encounters, Richmond’s 106-12 victory over Bedford on 16 May 1999, held the all-time scoring record for 27 years.
That 1999 fixture remains the league’s biggest margin of defeat. Bedford rested their entire first team for the match because their Premiership status depended on upcoming play-offs against Rotherham.
This doesn’t do the Premiership any good whatsoever.

Century Matches Shift Modern Attack
The current era of high-scoring fixtures has seen defences struggle to contain rampant attacks across the competition. On 15 May 2026, Northampton scored 14 tries against Bristol Bears, including four by George Hendy, accumulating 61 points before half-time.
Six of the ten highest-scoring matches in Premiership history took place during April or May. This late-season timing indicates that tiredness or having one eye on the beach may have a part to play in defences getting porous.
Historical Defeats And Relegation Fates
West Hartlepool featured in several of the league’s most lopsided defeats before dropping down the English rugby pyramid. They lost 91-21 to Harlequins on 23 March 1996, during a season where they finished bottom of the table.

They suffered another heavy defeat on 16 May 1999, losing 72-37 to Leicester Tigers as the champions lifted the trophy. West Hartlepool currently compete in Regional 2 North.
Similarly, Orrell fell to an 89-18 defeat against Harlequins on 6 October 1996, during an era when big-spending squads featured international talent like Keith Wood, Robbie Paul, and Gary Connolly. Orrell now play in Counties 2 ADM Lancashire & Cheshire.
Recent Fixtures Match Historic Tries
Sale Sharks endured two difficult fixtures against Saracens during the 2025-26 season, losing 65-14 away before conceding 85 points in a home defeat on 19 April 2026. Teenager Noah Caluori scored five tries in each of those two matches.

Bristol Bears and Bath played out a 57-44 local derby on 27 January 2024, where Bath overturned a 33-15 half-time deficit before Rich Lane scored a last-minute try to secure victory for Bristol. That Bristol Bears v Bath game in January 2024 marked the first time a match surpassed 100 points since April 2002, when Bristol (then known as the Shoguns) lost to Sale Sharks.
