China has accused a British warship of intentionally provoking instability by sailing through the Taiwan Strait. the Chinese military described the HMS Spey’s recent transit as a disruptive act that “undermines peace and stability.”
The Royal Navy maintains that the HMS Spey’s patrol on Wednesday was pre-planned and conducted in accordance with international law. This marks the first such patrol by a British naval vessel in four years.
The patrol occurred as a UK carrier strike group, led by the HMS Prince of Wales, arrived in the Indo-Pacific for a deployment lasting several months. Prime Minister Keir starmer characterized the deployment as a clear message of strength to adversaries and unity to allies, involving approximately 4,000 UK military personnel.
China views Taiwan as its territory, a claim Taiwan disputes. Beijing has not ruled out using force to achieve reunification. China criticized the UK for publicizing the HMS Spey’s journey, calling it a distortion of legal principles intended to mislead the public. They asserted that Chinese troops monitored the ship and will counter any threats.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry, however, praised the patrol for safeguarding freedom of navigation. While U.S. warships regularly conduct such exercises, the last British naval transit was in 2021 by the HMS Richmond, which also drew condemnation from China.
Tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated since President Lai Ching-te, known for his anti-Beijing stance, assumed office. He has labeled Beijing a “foreign hostile force” and implemented policies targeting Chinese influence. China has responded with frequent military exercises, including simulated strikes on Taiwanese ports and energy facilities in April.
The HMS Spey is one of two British warships permanently stationed in the Indo-Pacific.China’s criticism coincides with unprecedented simultaneous drills by two Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific, near Japan, raising concerns in Tokyo.
