Zheng Yanxiong, who previously served as Beijing’s liaison ‍office chief in ‌Hong Kong, is anticipated to assume a ‍high-ranking position ⁤within the National People’s Congress⁢ (NPC), according to‌ sources familiar with the matter.

Zheng was abruptly removed from his post as director ⁣of Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong on ‍May 31.He is now expected to ⁢be ⁢appointed Executive Deputy Director of the NPC Education, Science, Culture and Health Committee, sources said.

This new role will ⁤allow Zheng to maintain his rank⁣ as a full minister. One source indicated that Zheng arrived in Beijing and​ commenced work with the NPC. His appointment is expected to be⁣ formally approved at the NPC‌ Standing Committee meeting later this month.

Before his departure,​ Zheng reportedly sent a poem to pro-Beijing politicians he collaborated with in Hong Kong, according to a source who requested anonymity.

What’s next

The NPC Standing Committee is expected to formally endorse Zheng’s appointment at its ⁢meeting in the ⁣second half of this month, solidifying his transition to this ‌new role within⁣ China’s legislative body.
