Hong Kong residents Safe Amid Middle East Tensions

Nearly all Hong Kong residents who were in Israel and Iran have safely departed, according to hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu. Lee stated that escalating tensions in the Middle East will not deter Hong Kong’s economic development and trade relations with the region. The safety of residents remains a top priority.
Lee said Tuesday that the Immigration Department had received inquiries from 21 Hong Kong residents in Israel or Iran as of Monday. Twenty have already left safely.
“Twenty of them have already departed safely,” Lee said. “The department will continue to maintain close contact with the remaining one Hong Kong resident and provide appropriate assistance.” He added that local authorities would coordinate with Beijing’s foreign ministry arm in Hong kong and relevant embassies.
Despite regional instability, Lee emphasized hong Kong’s commitment to further cooperation with Middle Eastern nations.
“No matter how the world changes, economic and trade development must proceed,” Lee said, “and we will all see the importance and necessity of cooperation.”
Lee added, “Whether it is the Middle East, Hong Kong, or other places, I believe that every government is working hard in other areas to ensure that economic development is not affected, and should work even harder.”
