Today (15 November 2021) at 1:30 p.m. Prof. Dr. Prasit Wattanapha, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital As Vice President of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Under the royal patronage, Mr. Thani Saengrat, Director-General of the Department of Information Ministry of Foreign Affairs As the chairman of the Public Relations Sub-Committee Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under royal patronage and Professor Dr. Wichian Panich, chairman of the International Awards Committee. Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under royal patronage jointly announced the results of the decision of the Prince Mahidol Award recipients for the 30th time of the year 2021 at Somdej Phra Boromarajonok Room, Siamin Building, 2nd floor, Siriraj Hospital.

The recipient of the Prince Mahidol Award for the year 2021 in the field of medicine namely

1. Associate Professor Dr. Gotlin Gorigo (Katalin Karikó, Ph.D.) Senior Vice President Bioentech RNA Pharmaceutical Co. federation of germany

Associate Professor Faculty of Medicine University of Pennsylvania PhiladelphiaUnited States / Hungary

Graduated with a Ph.D. from Szeke University. Hungary

2. Professor Dr. Dr. Drew Weissman (Drew Weissman, MD, Ph.D.) Director of Infectious Disease Vaccine Research and professor Department of Internal Medicine Faculty of Medicine University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia

United States of America

Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in medicine and a Ph.D. from Boston University, USA, after training at the National Institutes of Health. Maryland, USA with Dr. Anthony Fauci, recipient of the Prince Mahidol Award 2013 in the field of medicine.

  • Participate in medical mRNA research

Associate Professor Dr. Gotlin Gorigo and Professor Dr. Dr. Drew Weissman In 2006, they jointly discovered that the use of modified nucleosides reduced cellular reactions to RNA. RNA is foreign. This is an important step in utilizing RNA Messenger. This is because naturally Foreign messenger RNA introduced from outside the cell is detected by the cell’s antiviral mechanism.

and when a foreign RNA is found will stimulate various mechanisms to inhibit RNA translation and induce inflammation These mechanisms are a major obstacle to the injecting of messenger RNA into the body for preventive or therapeutic purposes. The findings, along with subsequent studies by Associate Professor Dr. Gotalien Gorico and Professor Dr. Dr. Dru Weissman, led to the use of pseudouridine in the study. Creating an RNA messenger and the invention of methods for purifying RNA messengers containing pseudouridine. It is the cornerstone of using Messenger RNA technology in the development of a vaccine against COVID-19. Associate Professor Dr. Gotlin Gorigo and Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Dru Weissman also played a key role in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. with this new technology quickly

  • to the covid vaccine

The results of Associate Professor Dr. Gotlin Gorigo and Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Dru Weissman have created a vaccine for COVID-19. RNA messenger type This is a vaccine that has been developed rapidly in response to the outbreak. This makes it possible to reduce infection and severe illness. It is also an important tool to control outbreaks in countries around the world. It is beneficial to health. and the lives of hundreds of millions of patients around the world.

3. Professor Dr. Peter Kullis (Pieter Culllis, Ph.D.) Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Canada

Graduated with a PhD from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and has been researching lipid biochemistry at this university until now.

Honoring 3 doctors for the invention of the Covid-19 vaccine

Professor Dr. Peter Kullis is a pioneer in the field of lipid particles. Lipid nanoparticles which are used in various medical fields such as delivering anticancer drugs to cancerous tissues without causing toxic effects to normal tissues And the fat particles that Professor Kullis developed the most interesting are: Fatty particles that can be positively charged. These fats are uncharged in neutral acidic conditions. but will have a positive charge when in acidic conditions These lipid particles are non-reactive and non-toxic to cells because they are non-charged. But when introduced into the cell within the acidic endosomes, it is converted to positively charged. This will make it fuse to connect to the lipid membrane of the negatively charged cells. Such fusion of lipid membranes allows the internal transport of the fat particles to be transported to the cytoplasm of the cell. This method has been used in the development of messenger RNA vaccines. which is currently being used to control the spread of COVID-19

The work of Professor Peter Kullis, in addition to enabling the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. has been accomplished It also provides a way to safely introduce nucleic acids into cells. This opens up many possibilities for future use of nucleic acid technology in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, bringing health benefits. and the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world.
