US Secretary of State Sees Progress in Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Talks
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed optimism about the ongoing ceasefire talks between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, citing “good progress” in the negotiations.
Blinken’s comments came after his recent trip to the region, where he met with various leaders to discuss the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution requires Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers from the border with Israel.
According to Blinken, the progress made so far is a result of the “very hard” work being done to “make progress in understanding what would be required for the effective implementation” of the UN resolution. However, he acknowledged that “there’s still more to do” to achieve a lasting ceasefire.
US Ambassador Amos Hochstein has also been involved in the negotiations, holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Joav Galant. The White House Middle East Coordinator, Brett McGurk, was also part of the conversation.
Despite the efforts, Lebanon’s Acting Minister of Health, Firas Abiad, told Arabic news channel Al Jazeera that there was no indication so far that the government had received any results from the talks in Israel.
