How does Chile qualify for the Davis Cup Final 8?

Nicolás Jarry was the only one who could celebrate a victory. Captain Nicolás Massú’s team has options to advance, but the outlook is complicated.

Chile reached the last day of competition in the World Group of Davis cup with the obligation to beat Canada to advance to the Final 8. If the result was 3-0 in favor of the team led by captain Nicolás Massú, everything was defined and both nations advanced to the decisive stage.

However, Nicolás Massú’s bet did not work out. First thing in the morning, Cristian Garin was left out of the singles and it was his turn to open the series against the Americans. Alejandro Tabilo (124°). The left-hander faced Alexis Galarneua (200th) and was the protagonist of the first setback of the day in Bologna.

The Chilean lost 6-3 and 7-6 (5) and the destiny of the national team took another direction. The move to the final for the silver salad bowl no longer depended on Chile, but in any case it needed the triumph of Nicolás Jarry (22nd). The best local singles player of the moment came out and in his presentation he got rid of Gabriel Diallo (158 °) with a double 6-4.

With this partial 1-1, Tabilo and Tomás Barrios jumped onto the court to define the doubles. With the Chilean 2-1, Massú’s squad only needed a Swedish victory this Sunday against Italy, however, the loss 6-3 and 7-6 practically requires a miracle considering the low level of the Scandinavians.

How does Chile classify?

With Canada’s 2-1 win over Chile, the chances of advancing to the Final 8 did not disappear, however, they were greatly reduced. With no confrontations ahead, Nicolás Massú’s team must wait for what happens in the series in Italy against Sweden, a squad that has fallen out of tune, losing everything it has played.

To advance, Chile needs the Scandinavians to win 3-0.

How is the Davis Cup 2023 defined?

Of the four groups of four teams competing in this phase in Bologna (Italy), Manchester (England), Valencia (Spain) and Split (Croatia), the best two advance. They will define the tournament in direct elimination series in a stage that will be held between November 21 and 26 in Malaga, Spain. It’s called Final 8.
