This reunion of footballing titans has ignited excitement among fans, who are eager to see if this star-studded lineup can deliver an MLS cup.
“This is a special opportunity,” mascherano said. “To work with these players again, to be part of this project in miami, it’s something I couldn’t turn down.”
Mascherano’s connection with Miami’s superstars dates back to their dominant years at Barcelona. Although the five players haven’t shared the pitch together in over six years, their shared history and understanding of each other’s game could prove invaluable as they embark on this new chapter.
Mascherano: Coaching Messi Was the Deciding Factor in Inter Miami MoveArgentine legend Javier Mascherano has revealed that the opportunity to coach Lionel Messi was the primary reason behind his decision to take the helm at Inter Miami CF.
In an exclusive interview with AS USA Latino, Mascherano, who recently led Argentina’s U-20 national team at the Paris Olympics, expressed his excitement about working with Messi and a talented roster of players.
“the privilege of coaching Messi,” Mascherano said, highlighting the key factor in his decision. “Obviously, players of the caliber of my former teammates like Luis [Suarez], ‘Busi’ [Sergio Busquets], Jordi [Alba] and others I’ve had the chance to know, especially the Argentines, and some young academy players like Noah Allen and David Ruiz, who have potential. Having worked with youth players for a long time, I enjoy continuing to have this opportunity.”
Mascherano inherits a team that achieved historic success in the 2024 MLS regular season, clinching the Supporters’ Shield with a record-breaking 74 points. Though, their playoff run was cut short in a shocking first-round exit against Atlanta United.
Despite the disappointing playoff result, Mascherano acknowledged the team’s accomplishments and expressed his intention to build upon the existing foundation.
“The team has done very well,” Mascherano stated. “Regrettably, during the playoffs, they had the misfortune of two bad games and were eliminated. We need to analyze the whole picture, not just the final snapshot. From there, with my imprint, my ideas, what I think, what I like, I might change a few things in the style of play, but not much.”
One area Mascherano will likely focus on is strengthening the defense.Inter Miami led MLS in errors resulting in shots (26) and goalkeeper Drake Callender only managed five clean sheets in 32 starts.
Mascherano’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Inter Miami CF. With Messi at the heart of the team and a proven leader at the helm, the Herons will be aiming for even greater heights in the 2025 season.
