Minigrids already provide electricity for more than 3 million people in the Amazon Rainforest, though they remain mostly powered by diesel generators, according to data from Global Energy Monitor. In 2023, this reliance cost an estimated USD $2.5 billion, which was paid for through the tax-funded Fuel Consumption Account, and generated approximately 1.6 MtCO2eq in emissions.
Independent Power Producers often own these diesel minigrids and benefit from subsidies that have slowed the broader transition to renewables. Furthermore, while large-scale solar power projects have been initiated in the past, a lack of planning and adequate training has rendered 80% of systems nonfunctional within five years, as detailed by Global Energy Monitor.
The Expansion of Solar Infrastructure
Government programs intended to reach off-grid communities frequently lack data on connections and system implementation, making monitoring difficult. Preliminary assessments of initiatives like Mais Luz para a Amazônia have highlighted three major opportunities for improvement: creating a publicly accessible database, increasing public transparency, and replicating existing databases of grid-connected solar chains for off-grid systems.
As of 2023, solar has overtaken wind as Brazil’s second largest generation source, sitting behind hydropower, which represents 26% of electricity generation, according to Global Energy Monitor. Brazil revised its carbon reduction goals in October 2023, committing to cuts of 48% by 2025 and 51% by 2030.
Sustaining Local Livelihoods Through Açaí Processing
The Brazilian Amazon is environmentally vulnerable, making electricity access and necessary infrastructure construction difficult. An estimated 425,000 families across Brazil are not connected to the national electrical grid, a figure experts believe may be higher since the last official census took place in 2010.
According to a separate study by the Instituto de Energia e Meio Ambiente, approximately 990,000 residents in the Brazilian Amazon are without power, and 19% of those individuals reside on Indigenous territories. More than 28 million people reside in the Northern region of Brazil, which experiences some of the lowest Human Development Indexes due to logistics, energy, and communication hurdles.
By introducing solar power to support activities like açaí processing, communities gain reliable refrigeration for food and medicine, greater local opportunities for young professionals, and improved internet and communication access. Despite these clear advantages, widespread rollout continues to face hurdles including a lack of coordination across state governments, insufficient regulatory frameworks, high upfront costs, and unclear waste management strategies.
