End-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS messaging between Android and iPhone devices is rolling out via a beta program, closing a long-standing security gap that previously left texts vulnerable during transit between the two operating systems, according to joint disclosures from Google and Apple.

The implementation addresses one of the final major feature hurdles for mixed-device communication. While Android-to-Android messages via Google Messages and iPhone-to-iPhone conversations via Apple’s iMessage have featured end-to-end encryption for years, messages passing between Android and iOS lacked this layer of security until now. Google and Apple announced the cross-industry effort jointly, confirming that backend updates will automatically handle much of the heavy lifting for users.

How to Enable RCS Encryption on Android and iPhone

For users sending messages from an Android device to an iPhone or participating in mixed-device group chats, enabling the feature requires specific configuration steps depending on the platform, according to setup instructions provided by Google and Apple. On Android, Google Messages turns end-to-end encryption on by default without requiring manual toggles for encryption itself, provided RCS chats are active. Users can open Google Messages, tap their profile icon in the top right corner, select Messages settings, tap RCS chats, and verify that the Turn on RCS chats toggle is switched on. Once connected, the status displays the phone number and indicates a connected state.

On the Apple side, iPhone users must ensure their devices are updated to at least iOS 26.5 to access the necessary beta tools, according to technical requirements outlined in the initial rollout. Users can open the Settings app, tap Apps, select Messages, locate RCS Messaging, and toggle the option to ON. From that same menu, users must also toggle End-to-End Encryption (Beta) to ON.

Wireless Carrier Requirements and Compatibility

Activating cross-platform RCS encryption also depends on support from individual wireless carriers, as both Apple and Google rely on telecom networks to help facilitate the secure connections. Apple maintains a public compatibility list tracking which carriers support end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta. In the United States, major networks including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon support the feature, alongside prepaid and MVNO providers such as Mint Mobile, Cricket, Metro, Straight Talk, TracFone, and Visible, according to Apple’s carrier directory. Outlets like How-To Geek note a similar roster of supporting networks at launch, including Boost Mobile, C-Spire, Consumer Cellular, Cox Mobile, and US Cellular.

By building RCS natively into the default messaging applications on both mobile platforms, the rollout reduces reliance on third-party cross-platform apps like WhatsApp or Signal for secure communication. However, How-To Geek reports that Google’s implementation of RCS creates a walled garden that essentially rules out third-party Android texting apps, maintaining platform control while delivering native encryption.

How to Verify Encrypted RCS Messages

Users can confirm whether their cross-platform messages are successfully encrypted by looking for specific interface indicators within their default messaging apps. On Android devices, a small lock icon appears beneath the messages. On iOS, messages display a lock icon alongside the word Encrypted, according to visual guides published during the rollout.

Google Messages users can perform an additional check within individual or group conversations by tapping the three-dot menu, selecting Details or Group details, and scrolling down to locate the End-to-end encryption status field, which must read On to confirm active protection.
