Research into the cognitive effects of video gaming suggests that regular play may be associated with improved cognitive performance in children, specifically regarding working memory and impulse control.

A study analyzing data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and other National Institutes of Health entities, found that children who played video games for three or more hours per day performed better on cognitive skills tests compared to those who had never played.

Functional MRI brain imaging analyses indicated that children playing video games for three or more hours daily exhibited higher brain activity in specific regions. These altered cortical activation patterns are located in areas of the brain implicated in visual processing, memory, and attention.

Beyond general performance, specific genres of games are linked to different cognitive benefits. Action and strategy games may improve capacities associated with learning, including problem-solving, quick thinking, and spatial attention.

These findings suggest that video games could have potential as digital therapeutics for mental well-being and cognitive development, moving the conversation beyond concerns regarding academic distraction.

A Notice of Retraction and Replacement published on April 10, 2023, clarified that children who played three or more hours per day also showed significantly higher scores for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression symptoms, and attention problems compared to children who had never played video games.

This study suggests that there may also be cognitive benefits associated with this popular pastime, which are worthy of further investigation.

The intersection of gaming and cognitive development has led to an increase in recommendations from educators and pediatricians who see the potential for these tools to improve memory and development in children.

While the associations between gaming and cognitive performance are becoming clearer through large-scale studies and neuroimaging, the specific neurobiological mechanisms driving these changes remain insufficiently understood. Most previous neuroimaging studies had limited sample sizes of fewer than 80 participants, making larger datasets like the ABCD Study critical for establishing these trends.

The current landscape suggests a complex balance where the potential for enhanced spatial attention and problem-solving must be weighed against the risks of academic distraction and mental health symptoms.
