Huawei, the Chinese technology giant, is set to release its own operating system (OS), Harmony OS, for PCs next year as it aims to compete with Microsoft in the computer market. The news follows Huawei’s successful launch of its own OS for mobile devices, which directly challenged Google’s Android operating system. Wang Qingluo, CEO of Shenzhen Kaihong Digital Industrial Development and a key figure in the development of Harmony OS, confirmed the plans during a question and answer session on China’s Sosendear Weibo.
Wang, who is also known as the “Father of Harmony,” previously served as the vice president of software for Huawei’s device business group and as the president of Huawei’s consumer AI and smart business. When asked by a netizen if Harmony OS for PCs would be released next year, Wang simply replied “yes.” This straightforward response has sparked widespread speculation that Huawei will soon offer Harmony OS for public use on computers as well.
Huawei’s decision to create an OS for PCs is part of a strategic move that has been in the works for some time. The company has already begun installing Harmony OS on its mobile devices as an alternative to Google’s Android, a move that was necessitated due to trade restrictions imposed by the US government.
