The Fall From Grace
Six years ago, a barrage of sanctions from the U.S.government threatened to dismantle Huawei, once a global smartphone powerhouse. In 2018 and 2020, Huawei even surpassed Apple and Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer [1], shipping over 240 million devices in 2019 and capturing over 17% of the global market. The restrictions, imposed in 2019, cut off access to crucial technologies like Google’s services and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for chip production, leading to a dramatic decline in sales.
Jü Cseng-tung, president of Huawei’s consumer business, described the period following the sanctions as a “disaster,” with monthly sales plummeting from 20 million units to just a few million. The company faced an existential crisis, but instead of succumbing, Huawei’s leadership chose a path of resilience and innovation.
A Strategy of Self-Reliance
Huawei responded to the sanctions by doubling down on internal research and development. A key component of this strategy was the creation of HarmonyOS, its own operating system, designed to foster a new, self-reliant application ecosystem. Simultaneously, the company made notable strides in developing its own chip technology, enabling it to once again produce high-end smartphones without relying on external suppliers.

Return to Form: Leading in China
While Huawei’s current smartphones may not always match competitors in raw hardware performance, the company has focused on excelling in areas like photography and pioneering innovative designs, such as the foldable Mate XS and tablets featuring layered OLED displays. This commitment to innovation appears to be resonating with consumers.
Recent data for the second quarter of 2025 reveals a significant turning point: Huawei has reclaimed the top spot in the Chinese smartphone market for the first time as the sanctions were imposed. This achievement signals a potential resurgence and a renewed push for global competition.
