According to a report by Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post cited by Observer.com, on January 3, local time, TechInsights, a Canadian market research and consulting organization, released a global smartphone sales forecast report broken down by operating system (OS). The agency predicts that Huawei’s independently developed HarmonyOS will surpass Apple’s iOS this year (2024) and become the second largest operating system in the Chinese market after Google’s Android.

TechInsights said in a report that although Google Android and Apple iOS will continue to dominate the global smartphone operating system, Huawei’s Hongmeng system is expected to gain and maintain an advantage in the Chinese market this year.

The report’s analysis noted that with the launch of the Huawei Mate60 series mobile phones in August last year, Huawei has returned to the 5G smartphone field. The report believes that Huawei will alleviate the chip shortage problem in the next few months and achieve a steady recovery in 2024. At the same time, it will promote the Hongmeng system to surpass Apple iOS in 2024 and become second largest smartphone operating system in the Chinese market.

TechInsights is a world-renowned market research and consulting organization headquartered in Canada. According to a report by China Daily last year, TechInsights disassembled the Huawei Mate60 Pro and found that the Kirin 9000s chip design and manufacturing were basically domestically produced. The vice chairman of the organization used words like “amazing” and “unexpected” at the time, believing that Huawei Mate60 Pro reflects the durability of China’s chip industry.

Since 2019, the US government has often restricted Huawei and many other Chinese companies from obtaining high-end chips on the grounds of “national security.” Against this background, in August 2019, Huawei “officially” announced the launch of HarmonyOS. In June 2021, a fully upgraded HarmonyOS 2 was unveiled at Huawei’s press conference, marking the official launch of the system on smartphones.

A previous report released by the Counterpoint market research organization shows that Hongmeng’s market share in the Chinese market has increased to 8% in the first quarter of 2023, while iOS’s market share is 20% and Android’s share is 72%; in the global market, Hongmeng market share The market share of the latter two is 20% and 78% respectively.

Although Huawei’s Hongmeng system is still far from the “three-thirds of the world” of Android and iOS, the system has made rapid progress since its release.

In November last year, Huawei revealed to Observer.com that “HarmonyOS is a brand new smart terminal operating system developed by Huawei for the era of the Internet of Everything. It provides a unified language for different intelligence, interconnection and collaboration latest HarmonyOS devices 4The number of upgraded devices has exceeded 100 million within 3 months.”

The South China Morning Post reported that HarmonyOS is expected to reach another milestone when HarmonyOS Next is launched in 2024. At a press conference in late September last year, Huawei’s terminal business CEO Yu Chengdong announced that applications native Hongmeng have been fully launched and the developer preview version of HarmonyOS NEXT will be open to developers in the first quarter of 2024.

It is worth noting that with the full launch of Hongmeng native applications, Huawei has reached successive cooperation with Internet companies such as Meituan and Qunar. Many Internet companies have also released a number of Hongmeng-related jobs recently.

For example, NetEase has updated the position of senior/senior Android development engineer, which requires participation in the research and development of cloud music iteration of multi-terminal and multi-OS products (Android, Hongmeng, etc.). Meituan has released a number of Hongmeng development-related positions such as Hongmeng senior engineer and Hongmeng infrastructure engineer. According to the Maimai platform, the monthly salary of Meituan Hongmeng infrastructure engineer jobs is between 40,000 yuan and 60,000 yuan (RMB, the same below). At the same time, DingTalk also announced the position of Hongmeng development engineer, with a monthly salary between 15,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan.

The South China Morning Post also mentioned that on December 6 last year, McDonald’s China reached a Harmony cooperation agreement with Huawei and will become one of the first international food companies on the mainland to adopt HarmonyOS Next. On December 7 last year, Alipay and Huawei Terminal announced their collaboration to launch the development of native Alipay Harmony applications based on HarmonyOS NEXT.
