Background: Huckabee’s Pro-Israel Position
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas (1996-2007), is a well-known Christian Zionist with a long-standing record of unwavering support for the state of Israel JNS news. This position led to his consideration by President Donald Trump for the role of US envoy to Israel Haaretz. he has consistently avoided using the term “west Bank,” preferring the biblical terms “Judea and Samaria,” and generally denies Palestinian nationalism.
A Shift in Response to violence
In July 2023, Huckabee appeared to moderate his stance following incidents of violence against Palestinians. The killing of an American citizen by violent Jewish settlers and arson attacks targeting the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh prompted a surprisingly strong condemnation from him. His visit to Taybeh marked a turning point.
During his visit to Taybeh on July 19, 2023, Huckabee met with Mayor Ibrahim Abu Dayyeh and prominent citizens, including Palestinian American businessmen Daoud and Nadim Khoury, founders of the Taybeh Brewery. He stated that, as a potential American envoy, his duty was to represent all Americans, not solely align with one side of the conflict.
Condemnation of Settler Violence
Huckabee learned that settlers illegally occupy approximately 7,000 dunams (roughly 1,730 acres) of privately owned land belonging to Taybeh and that the village regularly experiences settler attacks. He responded by calling for a robust response to the violence, labeling the settler attacks as acts of “terrorism.” He specifically demanded that attacks on houses of worship be addressed and that perpetrators be “aggressively investigated … not just reprimanded, that’s not enough.”
Meetings with Palestinian Leadership
following his visit to Taybeh, Huckabee engaged in politically notable meetings in Ramallah. He met with Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh at the presidential headquarters and also conferred with Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. These meetings signaled a willingness to engage directly with Palestinian leadership, a departure from his previous public statements.
The Context of Settler Violence
Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has been a long-standing issue. According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there has been a significant increase in incidents of settler violence in recent years.OCHA data shows a marked rise in incidents, including physical assaults, property damage, and intimidation
