The Cambodian Parliament Approves General Hun Manet as New Prime Minister after 38 Years

In a historic move, General Hun Manet has been officially approved as Cambodia’s new prime minister by the Cambodian parliament, marking the end of a 38-year leadership under Hun Sen.

Hun Manet, born on October 20, 1977, is the eldest of five children of Hun Sen, who is currently 45. He grew up in Phnom Penh and joined the Cambodian army in 1995. In addition to his military career, he pursued higher education in both the United States and England.

A notable achievement in Hun Manet’s educational journey is becoming the first Cambodian to graduate from a military academy in the United States. He continued his studies at West Point in 1999 and obtained a degree in Economics from New York University in 2002. He further pursued a PhD in Economics from the University of Bristol in 2008.

Hun Manet has held various positions within the Cambodian army, including Deputy Supreme Commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, Commander of the Cambodian Army, Chief of Defense of the Prime Minister, and head of the National Counter Terrorism Unit. Additionally, he is also the leader of the CPP youth group and a member of the party committee.

Past interviews with Hun Manet have revealed that he prefers to keep his vision for Cambodia private and often avoids lengthy speeches, preferring to communicate through actions and gestures.

With Hun Manet assuming power, it is anticipated that superpowers will closely monitor his approach towards governance. Will there be a shift towards a more liberal approach, strengthening ties with Western nations, or will Cambodia continue to remain within China’s sphere of influence?

Under Hun Sen’s leadership, Cambodia has significantly aligned itself with China, benefiting from significant investments. Chinese President Xi Jinping personally congratulated Hun Sen after the recent election.

Despite the change in power, analysts suggest that Hun Sen will still retain significant influence. He will continue to lead the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and has expressed his intention to head the Senate and the King’s Supreme Council. Furthermore, Hun Sen has committed to staying involved in politics for at least another decade in different capacities.
