On July 5th, Korean time, a video released on Nottingham Forest’s YouTube channel showcased Hwang Eui-jo, the Korean national football team striker, joining the team’s training session. The footage captured the warm greeting between Hwang Ui-jo and Alex Might, expressing a sense of camaraderie within the team.

Nottingham Forest publicly introduced their preseason squad via their official YouTube channel. The players, including Hwang Eui-jo, were seen entering the training ground, exchanging cordial greetings with their teammates. Julien Biancone, who had been recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, received a warm welcome from his fellow players. Newcomer Willie Bolly also joined in the friendly exchanges.

Among the familiar faces was Hwang Ui-jo, who interacted enthusiastically with his colleague Alex Maiton. After the warm greetings, Hwang Ui-jo was seen warming up on a stationary bike, while the rest of the players engaged in physical assessments with the coaches.

Before joining Nottingham Forest, Hwang Eui-jo played for Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1, where he showcased his talent as a striker. In his first season, he scored six league goals, establishing himself as a prominent player. Furthermore, he achieved double digits in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons with 12 and 11 league goals, respectively. However, due to Bordeaux’s relegation to the second division, he sought a transfer.

Hwang Eui-jo’s transfer to Europe faced complications as he had already played for two teams, Bordeaux and Olympiacos. European regulations prevented him from playing for a third team in one season. Consequently, Hwang Eui-jo decided to return to the K-League and signed a short-term contract with Seoul FC, coached by Ik-soo Ahn, who previously trained him during his time at Seongnam FC.

During his stint at Seoul FC, Hwang Eui-jo showcased his talent as a top striker, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 18 appearances. Following his farewell match against Suwon Samsung, Hwang Eui-jo set his sights on the European stage once again.

Nevertheless, controversy surrounding his personal life arose after the farewell match. An anonymous netizen claimed to have been in a relationship with Hwang Ui-jo and accused him of seeing other women. Hwang Eui-jo’s team swiftly denied the allegations and vowed to take legal action against spreading false information. In response, Hwang Eui-jo traveled to England on July 2nd, after conducting further investigations into the accuser.

Upon his return to Nottingham, Hwang Eui-jo is expected to face a challenging start to the season. With eight forwards, including the Nigerian national striker Tywer Awoni, who scored the most goals for the team last season, and the talented Welsh player Brennan Johnson, Nottingham Forest boasts an impressive attacking lineup. Fans eagerly anticipate Hwang Ui-jo’s potential partnership with his national teammate and friend Son Heung-min from Tottenham on the EPL stage next season.

The Nottingham Forest club revealed the players who joined the team for the pre-season through its official YouTube channel on the 5th (Korea time).

The Nottingham players greet the camera as they enter the training ground. Center back Julien Biancone, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury in October last year and was rehabilitating, greets him with a warm welcome. Defender Willie Bolly, who joined the team last season, also greets the players in turn.

And a familiar face appeared. Hwang Ui-jo, who was packing things in the locker, greets his colleague Alex Maiton with a high five. He was then shown warming up by riding a bike. The players started to warm up by checking their physical condition with the coaches.

Hwang Ui-jo, who scored 6 league goals in the first season, was reborn as a leading striker the following year. In the 2020-2021 season, he scored double digits with 12 league goals (3 assists). In the 2021-2022 season, he scored 11 league goals (2 assists) and scored in double figures for the second consecutive season. However, as Bordeaux were relegated to the bottom 2nd division of the league (20th), he sought a transfer.

Hwang Eui-jo left Ligue 1 and moved to Nottingham Forest, who were promoted to the EPL at the time. At the same time as the transfer, I went on loan to Olympiacos in Greece. That was to compete consistently in the game in a team with easy competition before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, competing for the starting position was not easy. Suffering from injuries and poor physical condition, he took part in 12 official matches and provided only one assist. The quick moves and sense of goal that he showed in Bordeaux and the Korean national football team were hard to find.

The lease ended in default. Olympiacos hastily announced that Hwang’s loan would end early. Hwang Eui-jo, who had played for two teams through Bordeaux and Olympiacos at the time, had trouble transferring to Europe because of the regulation that he could not play for three teams in a European league in one season. Accordingly, Hwang Eui-jo chose to rent a ‘hometown’ K-League. I signed a short-term contract for six months with Seoul, where Ik-soo Ahn coached me during Seongnam FC.

He managed to regain his sense of the game and scored 4 goals and 2 assists in 18 appearances. After the farewell match against Suwon Samsung on the 24th, the short-term lease was over, and Hwang Eui-jo began to challenge the European stage once again.

After the farewell fight, he also experienced controversy over his personal life. On the 25th of last month, an anonymous netizen claimed to be a woman who had been dating Hwang Ui-jo through SNS and left a revealing post saying, “Hwang Ui-jo met other women besides herself .” As the controversy erupted, Hwang Eui-jo’s team declared that they were all baseless and announced that they would take legal action against false information. Hwang Eui-jo left for England on the 2nd after further investigation of the complainant on the 1st.

Hwang Eui-jo, who returned to Nottingham after spells at Olympiacos and Seoul, is expected to face a difficult start to the season. Currently, Nottingham’s forward resources reach a total of eight players, including Hwang Ui-jo. There is the Nigerian national striker, Tywer Awoni, who scored the most goals in the team with 10 league goals last season. Brennan Johnson, a promising player in the Welsh national team who has scored 8 league goals, is also alive and well. Interest is growing whether Hwang Ui-jo will be able to step on the EPL stage next season with his national teammate and friend Son Heung-min (Tottenham).
