The HYROX competition over the weekend saw a remarkable performance by Joanna Wietrzyk, who shattered the women’s individual world record at an event held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Wietrzyk, a 23-year-old Australian athlete, improved the previous record by 20 seconds, finishing with a time of 56 minutes and 3 seconds. The previous best time was held by American Lauren Weeks, who achieved it in Glasgow in March of last year.
The HYROX competition, which began in 2018, is a hybrid discipline gaining popularity among younger athletes. It consists of eight 1-kilometer runs interspersed with eight fitness exercises: skierg, sled push, sled pull, burpees, vogatore, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Since its inception, the women’s world record has been broken eight times, for a total of twelve instances, with times improving from 1 hour and 8 minutes to just under 56 minutes.
Wietrzyk is also a proficient marathon runner, with a personal best time of 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 43 seconds, achieved in August of last year at the Sunshine Coast in Australia.
