A major crash on Interstate 70 near the eisenhower Tunnel Wednesday afternoon resulted in five injuries and shut down the highway for nearly eight hours, according to the State Patrol. The multivehicle accident is still under investigation.
The State Patrol reported the crash occurred around 3 p.m. A 57-year-old Texas man driving a semitrailer westbound allegedly lost his brakes and collided wiht another semitrailer. The impact forced both trucks off the left side of I-70. The second semitrailer overturned in the median.
According to officials, the initial semitrailer also struck an eastbound Toyota RAV-4 and a Toyota Tacoma. Four occupants sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital.The driver of the second truck suffered life-threatening injuries.
The Texas truck driver was cited for careless driving causing injury, the State Patrol said.
