Cargo workers demand that “the safe fare system should be extended to all types of vehicle and item.” After the first general strike in June, cargo workers first demanded the introduction of a secure ticketing system for five types of vehicles: steel products, hazardous materials, automobiles, grain/feed, and delivery trucks. However, neither the government nor the ruling party even discussed it. Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong strongly refuses to expand items subject to the safe price system. On the 22nd, “(expansion items) have no clear safety improvement effect as a result of research service,” and on the 23rd, “items other than cement and containers have many salaries. There is no way to calculate standard prices. Demanding this is a request for unilateral surrender, which is difficult to accept.” In his public talk on the 24th, he only repeated the ‘zero tolerance principle’.
Countries other than Korea that operate safe fare systems are gradually expanding the types of vehicles and items. New South Wales, Australia, started in 1979 and currently applies it to all types of vehicles and items except food delivery vehicles. Brazil also operates a similar system, which applies to 12 items including general, refrigerated and dangerous goods.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport also agreed to widen the scope of the application when discussing the security pricing system for the first time.
