I finally met ‘Apple Pay’, I used it myself with an Apple Watch

This article is a review of Apple Pay, which started service in Korea on March 21. Waiting for the introduction of Apple Pay

As an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and MacBook user, I’ve been living in the Apple ecosystem for over five years. As an Apple user, I was generally satisfied, but the only thing I was disappointed with was the absence of ‘Apple Pay’.

Online, there were many other simple payment methods such as Naver Pay, Toss, and Kakao Pay, so there was no major inconvenience. However, it was very inconvenient when tagging a shipping card or paying in an offline store. It was a bit cumbersome to have to carry a separate wallet for transit cards and payments.

That’s the point where I was considering whether to switch to Samsung for my next mobile phone because of a friend who uses Samsung Pay. So, I was eagerly awaiting the launch of Apple Pay in Korea. Apple Pay has been uncertain about its domestic release due to card fees per transaction and the introduction of NFC terminals, which are rare in Korea. And finally, through that task, Apple Pay was launched in Korea. In this article, I would like to tell you about my experience using Apple Pay. “Hey, you two don’t have to carry your wallet anymore!”

A brief introduction to Apple Pay

1) Apple Pay payment method

As the name suggests, Apple Pay is a digital wallet service provided by APPLE. While Samsung uses the MST payment method, Apple Pay uses the NFC payment method.

The NFC (Near Field Communication) payment method enables data communication over a short distance. Payment is simply made by bringing the device close to the contactless terminal. Most smartphones support NFC payment, but compared to Samsung Pay’s MST payment method, NFC payment terminals have not yet been introduced to many offline stores.

2) Devices that support Apple Pay

  • iPhone: Available for all models from iPhone 6s or later (models with FACE ID, TOUCH ID function)
  • Apple Watch: Apple Watch: All series that support watchOS 2 or later
  • iPad: iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 or later (models with FACE ID, CONTACT ID function)
  • MacBook: MacBook Pro models released after 2016 and Mac models released after the end of 2012 can also be used (models with TOUCH ID function)

Note that the iPad and MacBook do not have NFC, so they cannot be used offline. (source: An apple)

3) Where to use Apple Pay

  • Offline stores: GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Ministop, etc. (see picture below)

  • Online: Baedal Minjok, Domino’s Pizza, Paul Bassett, GS Fresh Mall, etc. (refer to image below)

4) Apple Pay card company

Apple Pay can only be used with a Hyundai Card. At first, it was heavily promoted as an exclusive contract, but ultimately failed, so it is expected that other card companies will be able to introduce it later. The disadvantages of the functionality provided are that carrier cards are not supported, and installment payments are not possible when used online. So, so far, only online and offline micropayments can be used.

Apple Pay Real Review: Offline Stores

By coincidence, Baekdabang, an affiliate store that accepts Apple Pay, was near my house, so I went to visit it. Since I usually use the Apple Watch more than my mobile phone, I installed the Apple Pay gesture function on the Apple Watch. I set up Apple Pay to run with a thumb and fingertip gesture, and the Apple Pay payment method using this is very simple.

1. Order a drink

2. Payment guide and NFC terminal installation in the store

3-1. When paying with an iPhone, press the power button twice to activate Apple Pay, then Face ID is recognized and payment is made instantly

3-2. When paying with Apple Watch, long press the button under the crown of the Apple Watch twice (double)

4. Payment completed

Apple Pay can be used for iPhone and Apple Watch. In the case of the iPhone, it appears that the payment was made as soon as it switched to the payment mode after implementing Apple Pay. It was as if I pulled out a physical card and grabbed it and paid for it, so I was surprised. With Samsung Pay, I even held my phone on the payment terminal, but with Apple Pay, I didn’t even touch it, but even though I didn’t touch it, the great NFC feature completed the payment quickly.

Judging from this experience, it seems that a quick payment can be made by setting a gesture with the Apple Watch when it is tiring to take out the phone. Instead, the Apple Watch, unlike the iPhone, can be paid by virtually touching it to the payment terminal. Still, both are great as you pay before you even get to the terminal. I don’t think iPhone users will need a physical wallet anymore. This is because you can make fast payments even if you only carry your iPhone and Apple Watch.

How to set up Apple Pay

Here, I would like to share some tips and methods for setting up Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch. FYI, if you have an Apple Watch, I highly recommend it because it’s much easier than an iPhone.

1) How to install iPhone

4. Add an Apple Pay card to the bottom of your profile

5. after adding, go to wallet app

6. You will receive a text message when the addition is complete

*Note: When you receive a text message for the first time, there are many users, so we inform you about the delay before using it. After that, if approved, you will receive a text message saying that you can use it as shown in the image above.

2) How to set Apple Watch gestures

3. Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > Hand Gestures > Select the action you want in Customize Gestures (*For reference, I chose to put my thumb and index finger together.) > Select Apple Pay.

4. In Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > Hand Gestures, scroll down to the bottom to enter Active Gestures.

5. Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > Hand Gestures > Enable Gestures > Switch to None

At this point, if you turn off the activation gesture in steps 4 and 5, Assistive Touch is always activated, so even if you wear the watch and make a gesture at any time , the Apple Pay window opens.

Conclusion: An honest review of Apple Pay

If you are a loyal customer of Apple, which has already formed the Apple ecosystem, it seems that there will be no more phenomenon of breaking away from other brands because of Pay now. However, as it is still in the early stages of rollout, the number of payment functions (transport cards), associated brands, and associated card companies will have to increase, but honestly, I was satisfied with using this lonely Since the introduction of Apple Pay itself is a problem, I think it’s only a matter of time until it becomes universal in the future.

1) Satisfied offline!

Due to the strong synergistic effect with the Apple Watch, it is a strong advantage that you can easily call Apple Pay with a gesture without taking out your phone. It is also the same as achieving fast contactless payment with an NFC payment method.

Simple payment companies also entered the offline market, but no competitor was as big as Samsung Pay in terms of market share. Therefore, it is expected that Apple Pay will quickly secure market share in the future. In the case of a simple payment, you have to open the app, but in the case of Apple Pay, the process itself is more convenient because you can pay with just a gesture.

2) Well online again?

However, the above benefits are limited to offline payments. It is still doubtful whether it can change the perception of simple online payment markets like Naver, Kakao, and Toss. Online, there is no big difference in the payment speed and Apple payment method or other simple payments. This is because if there is not a big difference in the user experience, they will end up choosing the one with more user benefits such as points.

In particular, since the Apple Pay card fee policy is notorious, affiliated card companies will also consider using the existing simple payment instead of Apple Pay. This is because a certain amount will be calculated as marketing expenses, such as accumulating user points, through a lower commission rate than Apple Pay. If you use Apple Pay, the base fee rate is high, so there is no margin left for promotional costs. Ultimately, this means that the benefits to consumers are reduced.

If there is no difference in the payment method, but it is difficult to accumulate points, I think I will continue to use Naver Pay because of the points. Due to the iPhone’s price differential policy based on in-app payment, Kakao emoticons and YouTube payments are also made on PC.

Above all, Apple Pay has not yet applied the installment payment function, so it is difficult to buy expensive products. Credit card companies are also likely to be reluctant to pay for expensive products with Apple Pay because of the transaction fee. The e-commerce industry is also reviewing Apple Pay in terms of service identification, but is not considering an active rollout.

As such, until Apple Pay takes root in credit card companies and online platforms, a clear payment policy study and the scope of the service must be negotiated accordingly. As the issue of settling costs is large, in some cases, it may be necessary to re-establish the product delivery method or the price differential policy as Apple’s in-app payment. It is not easy to collaborate with related departments such as the sales team, the accounting team, and the planning team. So unlike offline, the rapid growth of Apple Pay online seems premature.
