A Norwegian journalist has spoken publicly about witnessing a heated exchange between former U.S. President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump during a private event in Florida in early 2024, describing the incident as deeply unsettling and revealing of tensions within the former presidential couple.

The account was shared by Ingrid Larsen, a correspondent for Dagbladet, one of Norway’s largest newspapers, in a personal reflection published on April 19, 2024. Larsen said she attended a closed-door gathering at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, in January 2024, where she was invited as part of a small international media delegation observing U.S. Political developments ahead of the 2024 election cycle.

According to Larsen, the incident occurred during a reception following a formal speech by Trump to a group of donors and allies. She stated that she saw Melania Trump approach her husband visibly upset, speaking in a low but tense voice. “She said something like, ‘You embarrassed me again,’ and he reacted immediately, raising his voice and telling her to ‘stop making scenes in front of people,’” Larsen recalled in her Dagbladet piece.

Larsen wrote that the exchange lasted less than a minute but left a strong impression on those nearby. “I could see the strain in her face — tight jaw, eyes narrowed — and his reaction was dismissive, almost impatient. It wasn’t loud, but it was sharp. People around us fell silent for a moment. No one knew what to do.”

She noted that Melania Trump quickly excused herself and left the room, while Donald Trump returned to his guests after a brief pause, appearing to compose himself. Larsen said no staff intervened and the event continued as if nothing had happened, though she observed that the former first lady did not return for the remainder of the evening.

The journalist emphasized that she did not initially intend to share the experience publicly. “I thought about it for months. As a journalist, you see things you’re not supposed to see. But I kept wondering: if this is how they behave in private, what does it say about the kind of leadership we were being asked to believe in?”
