I wanted to be traveling, and I’m happy to do whatever movie comes up, Iain Armitage said in Jessica Radloff’s oral history book, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy. The actor who played the title role on the hit CBS sitcom admitted he was the cast member most ready to say goodbye when the show ended its seven-season run.
Armitage Welcomes the End of the Seven-Season Sitcom
Armitage was eight years old when the comedy began filming, making the series a major undertaking from a young age. While some of his co-stars spent their time crying on the final days of production, Armitage felt differently about the conclusion.
he wasn’t “going home and crying all day” like some of his co-workers at the news of the series ending. It was “heavy and annoying and weird” to be in a state of mourning around “Young Sheldon,” and he refused to “stay in that heaviness forever.”

He noted that his mother instilled in him a strong sense of ephemerality, teaching him that change is positive and nothing good lasts forever. Armitage added that playing a 23-year-old version of Sheldon Cooper would not appeal to him.
Cast Co-Stars Agree on Creative Closure
Lance Barber, who played Sheldon’s father George Cooper Sr., echoed similar sentiments in the book regarding the timing of the conclusion. Barber observed that Armitage and other members of the company were genuinely ready to move forward artistically and personally after seven years on the Warner Bros. lot.

And Iain was ready, too … to move on to something else, artistically, and maybe personally … with things that boiled up a little bit toward the end of the season. I think a lot of people felt there were certain elements of the show that they were ready to move on from.

Reflecting on his childhood years on set, Armitage acknowledged that he faced normal childhood struggles and appreciated the understanding shown to him by the crew. Two years after the series finale aired in 2024, the actor looks back with nostalgic fondness for the people he worked with rather than specific moments on the soundstage.
"Young Sheldon" star Iain Armitage admits it "would suck" to be playing a "23-year-old Sheldon" and is "happy" that the show ended: “I wanted to be in Virginia.
