Bronx rapper Ice Spice is ready to set the record straight about her lyrical abilities, reflecting on her initial reluctance to defend her pen game.
Ice Spice, the breakout star known for hits like “Munch (Feelin’ U)” and “Barbie World,” has addressed the ongoing debate surrounding her lyricism. In a recent interview with NYLON, the artist, who attended the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, revealed that she initially allowed critics to believe she wasn’t focused on complex wordplay.
“I think my mistake was basically… letting people feel like they were right a little bit,” she confessed. “people were trying to say that I’m not a lyricist, and I just kind of went in with the attitude of ’Yeah, they’re right. I’m not.’ But it’s just not true.”
From 2022 to 2023, Ice Spice dominated the charts and social media with catchy, beat-heavy tracks, frequently enough produced by RiotUSA. while these songs achieved platinum status and viral fame, discussions about her lyrical prowess often took a backseat.
Now, Ice Spice is ready to claim her space as a skilled lyricist. “I didn’t really feel like having to prove that,” she explained. “But I figured I’d let you know that I definitely knew I was [a lyricist]. The whole time. I just let them say what they want and be happy with that.”
This statement marks a shift from her previous stance. In a 2023 interview with Complex, Ice Spice described her lyrics as “super simple,” aiming for digestibility rather than intricate complexity. Now, she seems ready to embrace a more assertive narrative about her songwriting skills.
